Govt To Enable Citizens To File FIR Against Social Media Firms For IT Rule Violation

New Delhi, Nov 24: In the event that citizens are offended by offensive content, such as deepfakes, the government will support them in bringing formal complaint against social media companies for violating IT regulations. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) will create platform where users can report violations of IT rules by social media platforms, according to Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar. The minister declared, “Meity will help users to very easily notify it about violation of IT rules and assist them in filing FIRs.”Following meeting with social media platforms, he was addressing the media. Chandrasekhar declared, “As of today, there is zero tolerance for violating IT rules.” The minister stated that FIR will be filed against the intermediary and that the content posting entity will be named if they reveal the origins of the content. According to him, social media companies have seven days to update their terms of service in compliance with IT regulations.
