NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged citizens to embrace the “Vocal for Local” initiative during the upcoming festive season and give preference to products made in India, saying pride in domestic goods would strengthen the country’s journey towards self-reliance.
Addressing the 137th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, Modi said festivals not only preserve traditions but also provide opportunities for people to connect with one another.
Referring to the upcoming festive calendar, the Prime Minister said Janmashtami will be celebrated on September 4, while Vishwakarma Puja will also be observed during the month.
He called upon people to use the occasion to honour local artisans, craftspeople and “Vishwakarma” workers in their communities.
With Deepawali also approaching in the coming months, Modi renewed his appeal for citizens to support locally manufactured products.
He stressed that “Vocal for Local” should not be viewed merely as an appeal to purchase traditional earthen lamps, saying the initiative had a much wider vision.
The Prime Minister urged families to check whether the products they purchase for their homes are made in India and said the path towards an Aatmanirbhar Bharat would be strengthened by taking pride in domestically produced goods.
Modi also called upon people to spread the message among their families, friends and communities.
Highlighting the role of the creative sector, he urged influencers, celebrities and other prominent personalities to personally adopt the “Vocal for Local” spirit and inspire others to follow suit.
The campaign seeks to encourage greater preference for domestically manufactured goods and services while supporting local artisans, enterprises and employment opportunities.
Modi’s appeal comes ahead of a series of major festivals when consumer spending traditionally rises across the country.
