ED may issue fresh summons to Kejriwal in excise policy case

NEW DELHI: According to official sources on Thursday, the Enforcement Directorate may send Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal a fourth summons to participate in the investigation into the purported excise policy case after reviewing his response regarding his refusal to appear before the agency. The 55-year-old national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) declined to appear before the ED for the third time on Wednesday. She claimed that the ED's "non-disclosure and non-response approach" could not uphold the standards of justice, equity, or the law, and that the ED's "obstinacy" amounted to the agency taking on the roles of jury, judge, and executioner. According to the sources, Kejriwal's five-page response to the case's investigating officer, which he sent on Wednesday, is presently being examined by the ED, which may dismiss his claims that the summons was unlawful. According to the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the agency might send Kejriwal its fourth summons, they said. Previously, on November 2, December 21, 2023, and January 3 of this year, he was asked to surrender. On Wednesday night, Atishi, the leader of the AAP, and a few other party leaders posted on 'X', suggesting that the ED might raid Kejriwal's home and take him into custody. The Delhi government's excise policy for 2021–22, which granted licences to liquor dealers, is accused of enabling cartelization and favouring certain dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it—a charge that the AAP has consistently denied. After the policy was abandoned, the lieutenant governor of Delhi suggested a CBI investigation, and the ED then filed a PMLA case. KERALA: When Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the city of central Kerala on Wednesday to attend a women's convention organised by the BJP, he was greeted with a warm and enthusiastic reception. A lively atmosphere was created by the thousands of people, many of whom were ardent supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who lined both sides of his nearly two-kilometer roadshow from the General Hospital junction to the venue. The Prime Minister landed in a helicopter at the Kuttanallore helipad after launching a number of projects in Lakshadweep and reaching Kochi International Airport. After that, he started a roadshow at Thrissur's District Hospital Junction with his cavalcade. The roadshow began at 3:40 pm, with the prime minister greeting the people lining the route with both hands while riding in an open car. New Delhi, Jan 3: The three-day conference of DGPs and IGPs in Jaipur starting on January 5 will cover a number of important topics, including pro-Khalistani groups' activities, cyber frauds, and terror threats in Jammu and Kashmir, officials announced on Wednesday. Before speaking to them in a formal session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will engage in conversation with the nation's top law enforcement officials. Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, will be in attendance for the entire multi-session conference. Other significant topics anticipated to be covered during the meeting include the Maoist issue, interstate police coordination, the recently passed three criminal laws, and matters related to the general elections, according to a Union Home Ministry official.Approximately 250 officers holding the positions of Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Director General of Police (DGP) will be present in person for the conference, with over 200 more expected to participate virtually. The official stated that numerous officers have been assigned to give presentations on particular topics, including Left Wing Extremism, online fraud, cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, activities of pro-Khalistani groups, and counterterrorism. There will be in-depth discussions about how to handle all of these new internal security issues. The annual meeting was held in New Delhi up until 2013.The Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the Intelligence Bureau decided to move the event outside of the nation's capital the following year, following the election of the Modi government. As a result, it was hosted in Guwahati in 2014; the National Police Academy in Hyderabad in 2016; the BSF Academy in Tekanpur in 2017; Pune in 2019; and the Rann of Kutch in 2015. During the Covid pandemic in 2020, the meeting was conducted virtually; in 2021, it was held in Lucknow in a hybrid format. January 2023 saw the conference take place in New Delhi. The focus of the growing number of business sessions and topics is on enhancing law enforcement to better serve the public interest.Prior to 2014, national security issues dominated the discussions. According to a second official, since 2014, the focus of these conferences has alternated between national security and fundamental policing concerns, such as law and order, community policing, crime prevention and detection, and enhancing public perception of the police. In the past, the conference was focused on Delhi, with officers gathering specifically for the gathering. Since 2014, officers from all cadres and organisations have been able to develop a stronger sense of unity by staying on the same premises for two to three days, the official continued.The official went on to say that direct communication between the head of government and the top brass of the police has led to a convergence of opinions on the most important issues facing the nation and the creation of workable recommendations. The subjects for the past few years have been chosen following in-depth conversations with the top police officials. Following selection, multiple presentations are held in front of DGP committees to promote involvement and include suggestions from junior officers and the field. Consequently, all presentations are now comprehensive, rich in content, and include a number of persuasive, doable suggestions.The prime minister and the home minister attend the first business session, which is focused on the thorough follow-up of recommendations from previous conferences, which has become the standard since 2015, the official stated. The conference secretariat, under the direction of the Intelligence Bureau, keeps a close eye on recommendations with assistance from state nodal officers. The official added that decisions made in the last few conferences resulted in significant policy changes that improved policing. These changes included raising the bar for efficient policing in both urban and rural areas and improving contemporary policing techniques based on smart parameters. Pak’s Top Election Body Indicts Imran Khan, His Former Aide Fawad Chaudhry In Contempt Case

Islamabad, Jan 3: In a contempt case, Pakistan's highest electoral body on Wednesday indicted former prime minister Imran Khan, who is currently in jail, and his former information minister, Fawad Chaudhry. Chaudhry, a prominent former member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), and Khan, 71, are the party's founding chairman and founder. In 2022, the two leaders were charged with using derogatory language directed at the Pakistani Election Commission (ECP) and Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. The proceedings were held at the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where Khan and Chaudhry are both detained on separate charges, by a four-member panel of the ECP.The chief election commissioner and the electoral body were allegedly insulted by the two leaders, who were indicted for their crimes. Both refuted the accusations listed in the charge sheet while they were present in the courtroom when the charges were read. The panel postponed the contempt case hearing until January 16 following the indictment. The case was initially being heard in the ECP building, but the police refused to indict Khan for security reasons. As a result, the commission was forced to move the hearing to the Adiala Jail on December 6. The indictment follows several delays in the case. In April 2022, Khan was removed from office by a vote of no confidence. Over 150 cases have been filed against him since he was removed from office. Karni Sena Chief Murder Case: NIA Raids 31 Places In Haryana, Rajasthan

New Delhi, Jan 3: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) searched 31 locations in Rajasthan and Haryana on Wednesday in relation to the death of Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi. Following directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Central agency registered a case last month, and raids are still ongoing at the residences of suspects connected to it. These searches were conducted by several NIA teams working closely with the state Police. The action was taken a few days after the Rajasthan Police case was taken over by the NIA due to the possibility that prominent gangsters were involved in the murder.Three gunmen shot and killed the Karni Sena chief on December 5 at his Jaipur, Rajasthan, home. Gangster Rohit Godara, a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, took credit for Gogamedi's death shortly after it happened. On December 9, in Chandigarh, the two gunmen, Rohit Rathore and Nitin Fauji, were taken into custody. They told the police that Godara was the one who gave the order to kill. The main inquiry also discovered that the gunmen communicated with Godara's close assistants, Virendra Chahan and Danaram, during their escape.Officials believe that Godara and Gogamedi's disagreement over obtaining a ransom from certain businessmen may have contributed to the murder. Together with her husband, another woman has been detained in relation to the case; she is accused of supplying weapons and setting up lodging. Amidst the gunfire, the third gunman lost his life. CCTV footage of Gogamedi's murder showed two men shooting at the Karni Sena chief several times while a third man stood at the door. After Gogamedi was seen unconscious on the ground due to gunshot wounds, he was rushed to the hospital, where medical professionals pronounced him deceased. The security guard for Gogamedi who was hurt in the incident also passed away later. Arvind Kejriwal skips 3rd ED summons in Delhi excise policy case

NEW DELHI: AAP sources said that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday disregarded the ED's third summons in the Delhi excise policy case and instead sent a written response denouncing the notice as unlawful. While claiming that Kejriwal was prepared to assist the agency, the Aam Aadmi Party said that the summons was sent with the goal of apprehending him. "Why was the notice sent so close to the election season?" The party claimed that the notice is an attempt to prevent Kejriwal from participating in election campaigning. Kejriwal was called in by the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday to be questioned about a money laundering case related to excise policies.Kejriwal, who is also the convener of the AAP, received three ED notices in a row after he turned down two previous summonses from the federal agency for November 2 and December 21.
