Kashmir freezes with severe cold; moderate fog hits in Jammu

SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Valley continued to experience extreme cold wave conditions on Wednesday, with Pahalgam recording a low of minus 6.6°C. In the plains of Jammu, moderate fog also hindered visibility and caused problems for commuters, according to a meteorological department official. According to him, Srinagar recorded a low of minus 4.8°C, the same as the night before, which was 2.7°C below average for this time of year for the summer capital of J&K. According to him, Qazigund recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.6°C as opposed to minus 4.4°C the night before. According to the MeT official, the minimum temperature was 1.8°C lower than usual for Kashmir's gateway town.In contrast to the previous night's low of minus 6.2°C, Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 6.6°C, which was typical for the well-known south Kashmir resort. According to the official, Kokernag, which is located in south Kashmir, saw a minimum temperature of minus 3.2°C, down from minus 2.7°C the night before. The temperature was also 0.3°C higher than usual for the area. According to the official, Kupwara town in north Kashmir saw a low of minus 5.3°C, down from minus 4.6°C the night before. This was 2.8°C below average. According to the official, Gulmarg saw a low of minus 3.8°C, down from minus 4.0°C the night before, and the temperature was 3.2°C higher than usual for the well-known north Kashmiri skiing resort. He said that Jammu recorded a minimum temperature of 7.0°C, which was 0.3°C below normal for the winter capital of J&K and 7.7°C the night before. A low of 1.6°C was recorded in Banihal, 2.6°C in Batote, and 0.3°C in Bhaderwah, he said. The Kashmir valley is experiencing "Chillai-Kalan," a severe 40-day winter season that ends on January 30. It does not, however, signal the end of winter. The next two periods are called "Chillai-Khurd," which lasts for 20 days from January 30 to February 19, and "Chillai-Bachha," or "baby cold," which lasts for 10 days from February 20 to March 1. The weatherman has mostly dry conditions through January 3. There could be "very light" snow over "isolated extreme higher reaches" and generally cloudy and dry weather over plains from January 4-5, he said. It is mostly predicted to be dry weather from January 6-7. "Overall, there is no significant weather activity till January 7," he stated. NEW DELHI, Jan 3: Hundreds of junior wrestlers gathered at Jantar Mantar in this city on Wednesday to voice their protest against the loss of a pivotal year in their careers, which they attributed to the actions of top grapplers Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat. This development added a new dimension to the ongoing crisis in Indian wrestling. The junior wrestlers surprised the police by arriving from various parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Delhi, loaded into buses. Many of them were from the Virender Wrestling Academy in Narela, and nearly 300 of them were from the Arya Samaj Akhara in Chhaprauli, Baghpat. Many are still crammed into buses, and when more wrestlers show up at the historic protest site, they intend to get off and join their comrades.As they chanted anti-Punia, anti-Malik, and anti-Phogat slogans, the security guards found it difficult to keep them under control. The slogan "UWW save our wrestling from these 3 wrestlers" was flown by the demonstrators. Strangely, the top three wrestlers at the same protest location nearly a year ago were able to mobilise a sizable crowd in support of their cause when they demanded the arrest of former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on charges of harassing women wrestlers sexually. Thousands of supporters of Malik, Phogat, and Punia turned out from a variety of social groups, including farmers' organisations, social workers, politicians, women's organisations, and wrestling fraternity members.The three are currently the target of demonstrations from members of their community who have gathered at Jantar Mantar, claiming that they have ruined their careers. National teams and tournaments have not taken place since January 2023 because the WFI has been suspended twice and the sport is now governed by an ad hoc panel. Protesters on Wednesday called for the reinstatement of the suspended WFI following the dissolution of the ad hoc panel that the sports ministry had designated to oversee the sport. Karni Sena Chief Murder Case: NIA Raids 31 Places In Haryana, Rajasthan

New Delhi, Jan 3: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) searched 31 locations in Rajasthan and Haryana on Wednesday in relation to the death of Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi. Following directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Central agency registered a case last month, and raids are still ongoing at the residences of suspects connected to it. These searches were conducted by several NIA teams working closely with the state Police. The action was taken a few days after the Rajasthan Police case was taken over by the NIA due to the possibility that prominent gangsters were involved in the murder.Three gunmen shot and killed the Karni Sena chief on December 5 at his Jaipur, Rajasthan, home. Gangster Rohit Godara, a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, took credit for Gogamedi's death shortly after it happened. On December 9, in Chandigarh, the two gunmen, Rohit Rathore and Nitin Fauji, were taken into custody. They told the police that Godara was the one who gave the order to kill. The main inquiry also discovered that the gunmen communicated with Godara's close assistants, Virendra Chahan and Danaram, during their escape.Officials believe that Godara and Gogamedi's disagreement over obtaining a ransom from certain businessmen may have contributed to the murder. Together with her husband, another woman has been detained in relation to the case; she is accused of supplying weapons and setting up lodging. Amidst the gunfire, the third gunman lost his life. CCTV footage of Gogamedi's murder showed two men shooting at the Karni Sena chief several times while a third man stood at the door. After Gogamedi was seen unconscious on the ground due to gunshot wounds, he was rushed to the hospital, where medical professionals pronounced him deceased. The security guard for Gogamedi who was hurt in the incident also passed away later. NEW DELHI: On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasised the need to eradicate the terror ecosystem entirely and gave officials orders to bolster counter terrorism efforts in Jammu and Kashmir. In addition to recommending security agencies' appropriate deployment in Jammu and Kashmir's high-risk areas, Shah emphasised that all necessary protocols should be followed when carrying out counterterrorism operations. An official spokesperson said that the directives were issued during a high-level meeting that took place at the North Block in this city and during which the home minister examined the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting was attended by top intelligence and security agency officials, Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha.In order to eradicate the threat of terrorism, Shah reviewed the security agencies' area domination plan for Jammu and Kashmir during the meeting. He directed officials to bolster counterterrorism operations and emphasised the necessity of totally eliminating the terror ecosystem while examining the security grid's operation and the state of general security in Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu and Kashmir government had previously declared that legal action had been started and that compensation and jobs would be given to the families of the civilians who had died. During the review meeting, the home minister expressed gratitude to the Union Territory administration and security agencies for their efforts in reducing terror-related incidents, improving law and order, and preventing infiltration. Jammu and Kashmir has seen sporadic violence since the start of 2023. 54 people, including 28 terrorists and 19 security personnel, were killed in a series of encounters that occurred in the Jammu and Kashmir districts of Rajouri, Poonch, and Reasi last year, according to officials. The increase in violence has been attributed by the authorities to "desperate attempts from across the border" to resurrect terrorism in the area. In the Poonch district, there were 15 terrorists and five security personnel slain, while 31 people—ten terrorists and fourteen security personnel—were killed in Rajouri. New Delhi, Jan 2: Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, presided over a high-level security review meeting on Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. The Home Minister will go over the security grid's operation and other security-related topics during the meeting. According to reports, the Home Minister is assessing security in Jammu and Kashmir in light of recent assaults that have occurred there. Shah also emphasised better coordination between the Army, Police, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) stationed in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as complete area domination, during the meeting.Additionally, the Home Minister emphasised the necessity of enhancing and fortifying local intelligence within the Union Territory. It has been learned that the Home Minister will examine the zero-terror plan, the area dominance plan, the state of law and order, the UAPA cases, and other security-related matters. Along with other concerned officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Jammu and Kashmir, the meeting was attended by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Director General Dinkar Gupta of the National Investigation Agency, and Director Generals of the Central Reserve Police Force and the Border Security Force. In attendance at the meeting were Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Director of Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.The meeting took place a few days after terrorists opened fire on two army vehicles travelling through Dera Ki Gali in Rajouri's Poonch region on December 21, 2018, resulting in the deaths of four soldiers and the injuries of three others. Five soldiers, two of whom were captains, were also killed in action in November of last year following the Army and its special forces' anti-terror operation in Rajouri's Kalakote. Ten soldiers lost their lives in action during two separate attacks in the Rajouri-Poonch area in April and May of 2023. Between 2003 and 2021, this area had been relatively free of acts of terrorism; however, following that, encounters became more frequent. In the course of 2021 and 2022, anti-terror operations in the region resulted in the deaths of over 35 soldiers.According to sources in the security wing, Pir Panjal, which includes Rajouri district in addition to Poonch and portions of Reasi districts, has seen an increase in militancy in recent years. Several Army soldiers have died in the region after being ambushed by militants. On January 13, 2018, the Home Minister presided over a comparable high-level review meeting regarding the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. During the meeting, she declared that all security agencies are waging a fierce war against terrorism in accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's zero-tolerance policy.Additionally, he had stated that a 360-degree security system would be reinforced even more in order to totally eradicate terrorists' networks of support and information. NEW DELHI, Jan 2: According to a senior government official, the use of drones to smuggle weapons and drugs into Indian territory from across the border will end in the next six months because an indigenous anti-drone technology is being developed to stop all such misadventures by the anti-national elements. Up to three distinct designs of anti-drone technology are being developed by security agencies; the final product may combine any or all of the designs. "In the next six months, the threat of using drones to smuggle weapons and drugs across the border will end. Without a doubt, anti-drone technology will be installed by then, the official stated.The new technology is still undergoing trials and is nearing finalisation. For a number of years now, security agencies have faced a significant challenge due to the dropping of weapons, ammunition, and drugs from Pakistan into Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir via drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In August, the government announced that during the previous three years, 53 instances of drone smuggling of weapons and drugs from Punjab across the border had been found.The government has taken several measures to curb the threat, such as having the BSF effectively control the borders around-the-clock, monitoring, patrolling, installing nakas, and staffing observation posts along the international border. The Ministry of Home Affairs established the Anti Rogue Drone Technology Committee in March of last year, under the direction of the director general of the Border Security Force. The committee's task is to assess the technology available to combat rogue drones and certify that it is effective in combating these uncontrolled aerial vehicles. Japan Airlines Aircraft Catches Fire At Haneda Airport; All 379 Passengers, Crew Evacuated

Tokyo [Japan], Jan 2: Japan Airlines Flight 516, travelling from New Chitose Airport, burst into flames shortly after landing on Runway C at Haneda Airport on Tuesday at around 5:47 p.m. (local time), according to a startling incident that was reported by Japanese public broadcaster NHK. According to the report, the current state of affairs points to a possible collision with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft. According to Japan Airlines, there were 367 passengers and 12 crew members on board, including 8 children. Safe evacuation of all 379 occupants of the aircraft, including the crew, was achieved.The Tokyo Fire Department has sent out at least 70 fire trucks and other vehicles as part of a massive emergency response in response to the incident, according to NHK. According to reports, the aircraft that collided with the Japan Airlines flight was a fixed-wing MA722 aircraft from Haneda Air Base. One of the six occupants of the fixed-wing aircraft has apparently managed to escape, but it is still unclear how the other five are doing. The terrifying moment when flames shot from the aircraft shortly after it touched down was captured on camera footage from cameras that Japan Airlines and NHK had installed at Haneda Airport. Given that the flight was scheduled to take off from New Chitose Airport at 4 pm and land at Haneda Airport at 5:40 pm, the incident happened during what should have been a routine landing.
