Veteran journalist and Sahitya Akademi winner Farooq Nazki passes away at 83

SRINAGAR: Tuesday saw the death of veteran broadcaster, poet, and Sahitya Akademi winner Mir Mohammad Farooq Nazki in a Katra hospital. He was eighty-three. Nazki, who had a number of prominent roles at Doordarshan and All India Radio Kashmir, passed away on Tuesday night following a heart attack, according to family members. Two girls and a son survive him. According to the sources, he had moved to live with his son in Jammu because he had not been doing well for a few years. In 1995, Nazki's poetry collection Naar Hyutun Kanzal Wanas (Fire in the eyelashes) won him the Sahitya Academi award in Kashmiri. The sources claimed that Nazki, who also served as Omar Abdullah's and Farooq Abdullah's media advisor, would be buried on Wednesday at the Malkha cemetery in this city. They added that the body was being transported from Srinagar to Jammu. Various groups have expressed their condolences for the legendary journalist's demise. "It is not appropriate to grieve the loss of a qalander; rather, we should honour his meaningful existence. For he has departed this station, having added much to it. a loss to society that is also a loss to oneself. Lok Sabha takes up bills to include ‘Valmiki’ in list of SCs in J&K, expand list of Scheduled Tribes

NEW DELHI: 'Valmiki' was added to the list of Scheduled Castes in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir in 1956, and the Lok Sabha on Tuesday took up a bill to alter that order. A bill to add the communities of "Gadda Brahmin," "Koli," "Paddari Tribe," and "Pahari Ethnic Group" to the list of Scheduled Tribes in relation to Jammu and Kashmir was also taken up by the Lok Sabha. The Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Castes Order Bill 2023 was moved for discussion and passage in the House by Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Virendra Kumar. The Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Tribes Order (Amendment) Bill 2023 was introduced in the House by Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda.According to officials, the Valmiki community—a synonym for Chura, Bhangi, Balmiki, and Mehtar—has been suggested for inclusion at serial number 5 in the list of Scheduled Castes of Jammu and Kashmir's Union territory. The "Valmiki" addition to the Schedule of the Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Castes Order, 1956 is proposed by the Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Castes Order (Amendment) Bill, 2023. The officials stated that the "Pahari Ethnic Group," "Koli," "Paddari Tribe," and "Gadda Brahmin" populations have all petitioned to be added to the list of Scheduled Tribes by the Jammu and Kashmir administration. The Constitution (Jammu and Kashmir) Scheduled Tribes Order (Amendment) Bill, 2023 suggests making changes to the 1989 Scheduled Tribes Order in the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir. No Respite From Cold Conditions In Kashmir Valley

Srinagar, Feb 6: According to a MeT department official, there was no break from the extreme cold wave conditions in Kashmir on Tuesday, with minimum temperatures remaining several degrees below freezing in most areas of the valley. With a low of minus 11. degrees Celsius, the Pahalgam tourist resort in south Kashmir—the starting point for the yearly Amarnath yatra—saw its lowest temperature of the year Friday night. From minus 10.0 degrees Celsius the night before, the temperature in the Gulmarg ski resort in north Kashmir dropped to minus 10.5 degrees Celsius.After nearly four days of cloudy sky, the weather in Kashmir improved on Tuesday morning as predicted. The sun beamed over the valley. The 40-day worst winter season, known as "Chilla-i-Kalan," ended earlier this week, but the chilly snap has persisted in Kashmir. Currently, the valley is experiencing a 10-day "Chilla-i-Bachha" (baby cold) after a 20-day "Chilla-i-Khurd" (little cold).
