JAMMU, Nov 11: An alleged bovine smuggler was arrested on Saturday under the Public Safety Act in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, according to police. According to a police spokesman, Mohd Azam, a resident of Kothian village in Pouni tehsil, is a notorious bovine smuggler. He was arrested and taken to Kot Bhalwal jail, he said. According to the source, Azam’s dossier was prepared on the orders of Reasi Senior Superintendent of Police Amit Gupta and submitted to the district magistrate, who formally ordered his detention under the strict PSA.Azam was named in five FIRs filed in Rajouri, Reasi, and Jammu over the last three years under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, according to the spokesman. “In view of his continuous involvement in bovine smuggling and other variety of criminal cases and to safeguard the general public, it was necessary to book him under stringent law,” the prosecutor said.
