Indian dog breeds to be deployed in police duties soon

NEW DELHI: According to officials, the Tibetan mastiff, Himachali shepherd, Gaddi, and Bakharwal, as well as the Indian dog breed Rampur hound, will soon be used for police tasks like drug and bomb detection and suspect identification in addition to risk assessment patrols. While some dog species, like the Rampur Hound, are undergoing testing, the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), including the BSF, CRPF, and CISF, are all set to enlist Indian canine breeds for police duty. Additionally, an order to test the Himalayan mountain dogs has been issued.Currently, foreign breeds including German shepherds, Labradors, Belgian Malinois, and Cocker spaniels make up the majority of police dogs. "The SSB and ITBP have already wrapped up the trial with the Indian dog breed known as the Mudhol hound. A home ministry official stated that some other Indian dog breeds, such as the Rampur hound, are also being tested at the BSF and CRPF's canine training facilities. In addition, the ministry has mandated that the Border Security Force (BSF), Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) simultaneously test Himalayan mountain dogs like as the Himachali shepherd, Gaddi, Bakharwal, and the Tibetan mastiff. The trials are now underway.In the past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has discussed using science to promote regional canine breeds. Each dog that the CAPFs lease out is a member of a Police Service K9 (PSK) unit. The BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, NSG, and the Assam Rifles are the CAPFs that hire and train canines for use in law enforcement. In addition to patrols, police dogs are trained to detect drugs, counterfeit currency, and explosives like IEDs and mines.According to the official, dogs are occasionally utilised in terrorist search operations. A few crucial actions have also been done by the home ministry to improve the mutual learning and cooperation culture and ecosystem between the CAPFs and other law enforcement and police organisations regarding PSKs. With almost 4,000 canines, the CAPFs utilise police dogs more than any other agency in the nation. Approximately 300 dogs are employed by the CAPFs annually. Of all the CAPFs, the Central Reserve Police Force has the most dogs—roughly 1,500—while the Central Industrial Security Force has the second-highest number—roughly 700. About 100 canines are part of the National Security Guard (NSG), a counterterrorism outfit, according to another official.In 2019, as part of its police modernization project, the home ministry established the K9 squad with the goal of streamlining the dog breeding, training, and selection processes. Interestingly, in addition to patrolling risk-prone locations, all combat dogs of the CAPFs are currently subject to an annual evaluation exercise to determine their effectiveness and suitability for their designated jobs, such as sniffing out suspects, drugs, and hidden explosives, the official stated. Engineers develop new tunnel method for Kashmir rail link project

NEW DELHI: Indian Railways experts have devised a novel tunnelling technique to finish Tunnel-1, the 111-kilometer Katra-Banihal segment of the Kashmir rail link project, despite the challenging terrain of the Himalayas. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project's Katra-Reasi portion features a 3.2-km single tube tunnel at the base of the Trikuta Hills, which has been dubbed the most challenging part of the project. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has recently declared, "We have innovatively developed (I)-TM as Himalayan tunnelling method for tunnelling through the Himalayan geology to build tunnels in Jammu and Kashmir." A senior railway engineer described the new tunnelling technique, stating that it entailed pre-excavation support measures to address the "flowing conditions" observed during tunnel excavation.The railroads also rerouted the train line so that only a tiny section travels through the challenging terrain—which the engineers had declared to be the worst they had ever encountered—when constructing tunnels in the nation. A senior railway engineer participating in the project's development stated, "We inserted nine-meter pipes in the mountains. The engineers decided to provide rigid supports using 'ISHB' as opposed to the lattice girder method used in the New Austrian Tunnelling Method." We refer to it as pipe roofing. We used these perforated poles and filled them with PU grout to create an umbrella. This substance reacts with the soil to triple its volume and turn it into a rock-like substance. The stability of this structure is checked, and then we gradually start excavating," the engineer stated. Infiltration bid foiled in Uri sector; two terrorists killed

SRINAGAR: According to a defence official on Sunday, security forces killed two terrorists in the Uri region of Jammu and Kashmir, foiling an attempt to infiltrate along the Line of Control. A defence spokesperson headquartered in Srinagar said that troops were placed on high alert and the counter-infiltration grid was reinforced due to specific indications from intelligence agencies and J-K Police regarding probable infiltration in the Uri sector by heavily armed terrorists from across the LoC. A number of armed terrorists made an effort to infiltrate across the Line of Control by taking advantage of unfavourable weather conditions, such as continuous rain and low visibility, he claimed. India sends humanitarian aid to people of Palestine

NEW DELHI: On Sunday, India dispatched 32 tonnes of disaster relief supplies and over 6.5 tonnes of medical help to the Palestinian people. The cargo was transported by an Indian Air Force C-17 transport plane. The aircraft is flying the relief to Egypt's El-Arish airport. India provides humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. "A spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, Arindam Bagchi, announced on "X" that an IAF C-17 aircraft carrying around 6.5 tonnes of medical aid and 32 tonnes of disaster relief supplies for the people of Palestine is leaving for El-Arish airport in Egypt."Among other necessary items, the material includes essential life-saving medications, surgical supplies, tents, sleeping bags, tarpaulins, sanitary utilities, and water purification tablets," he stated. Three days prior, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed condolences to President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority on the deaths of civilians in a Gaza hospital and reaffirmed India's long-standing "principled position" on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Defence PSU making headway in developing indigenous top-end military gear
