Srinagar, Nov 27: Even as a dense layer of fog enveloped the valley, authorities reported on Monday that the minimum temperature in the majority of Kashmir saw a notable improvement, offering some respite to the locals from the bitter cold. The only weather station in the valley with a minimum temperature that dropped below freezing at minus 1.2 degrees Celsius was the ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir. The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, recorded a minimum temperature of 3.5 degrees Celsius, according to the officials, up from zero degrees the night before.According to reports, Kokernag town recorded a low of 2.8 degrees Celsius, while Qazigund, the town that serves as the entrance to the valley in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of 2.6 degrees Celsius. According to the officials, Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in the Anantnag district of south Kashmir, saw a low of 1.5 degrees Celsius. In Kupwara town in north Kashmir, the minimum temperature reached a low of -1.8 degrees Celsius. Monday morning the valley was shrouded in a dense fog. The fog, however, did not significantly affect air traffic at the Srinagar airport.According to the Met Office, there will probably be shallow to moderate fog in many areas of Kashmir through Tuesday. The majority of Jammu and Kashmir is expected to continue having cloudy weather through Tuesday, with sporadic light rain or snowfall. Beginning on Wednesday, there is a chance of light to moderate rain or snow in a lot of areas, along with a chance of thunderstorms or lightning in a few locations over the course of two days.
