SRINAGAR, Jan 10: Mussarat Islam, the managing director of Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), urged customers today to pay off any outstanding electricity bills. If they don't, KPDCL will be forced to accelerate its disconnection drives as required by Section 56 of the Electricity Act. He added that if smart metre customers do not pay their outstanding power bills, they will be automatically disconnected.The MD expressed grave concern about the high default rates in the residential, business, and industrial categories and said that the money collected from the settlement of outstanding bills will allow KPDCL to have sufficient resources available for the purchase of electricity, which is essential for ensuring a steady supply. The MD added that high default rates are negatively affecting the Corporation's financial stability since they will affect the flow of funds under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), which aims to modernise the LT Distribution Network in Kashmir Division.The MD further said that, in light of the imperative for realisation of arrears, KPDCL has issued instructions to all 19 Electric Divisions to further expedite the disconnection drives of defaulter consumers who are unwilling to pay their energy dues on time. JAMMU, Jan 10: According to sources, Nitin Agrawal, the director general of the Border Security Force (BSF), evaluated the operational readiness and security status of the troops manning the Jammu frontier's border with Pakistan on Wednesday. While visiting regions along the International Border (IB), Agrawal also paid a visit to Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at the Raj Bhavan, providing him with an update on the security conditions along the border. 2.5 Kg Narcotics Seized Near LoC In Poonch

JAMMU, Jan 10: In the Poonch region of Jammu and Kashmir, security personnel on Wednesday took drugs weighing 2.5 kg from a forward village close to the Line of Control (LoC), according to officials. They said that the contraband was brought in illegally from across the border and that it was discovered dumped in the Malti region in front of the border fence. Temperature plunges further in Kashmir, Srinagar records minus 5.0°C

SRINAGAR: The mercury dropped once further in the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday, with a low of minus 5.0°C recorded in Srinagar. According to a representative of the meteorological department, the temperature was 3.1°C lower than usual for this time of year in J&K's summer capital. He added that the previous evening's minimum temperature in Srinagar was minus 2.4°C. According to him, Qazigund recorded a minimum temperature of - 4.4°C as opposed to minus 2.6°C the night before. According to the MeT official, the minimum temperature was 1.3°C lower than usual for Kashmir's gateway town.In contrast to the previous night's low of minus 4.4°C, Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 6.3°C, which was 0.7°C above average for the well-known south Kashmir resort. According to the official, Kokernag, located in south Kashmir, saw a minimum temperature of minus 2.4°C, compared to minus 1.2°C the night before. The temperature was also 1.6°C higher than usual for the area. According to the official, Kupwara town in north Kashmir saw a low of minus 4.7°C, down from minus 4.5°C the night before. It was 2.0°C below normal there. According to the official, Gulmarg saw a low of minus 5.0°C, down from minus 4.6°C the night before. The temperature was also 2.6°C higher than usual for the well-known north Kashmiri skiing resort. He claimed that Jammu recorded a minimum temperature of 4.8°C, which was 2.6°C below usual for the winter capital of J&K and 5.1°C the night before. He added that the lows in Banihal (zero 1.4°C), Batote (minus 2.2°C), and Bhaderwah (minus 0.2°C) were recorded. The Kashmir valley is experiencing "Chillai-Kalan," a severe 40-day winter season that ends on January 30. It does not, however, signal the end of winter. The next two periods are called "Chillai-Khurd," which lasts for 20 days from January 30 to February 19, and "Chillai-Bachha," or "baby cold," which lasts for 10 days from February 20 to March 1. SEC notifies revision schedule for updation of Panchayat Electoral Roll-24

JAMMU: The dates for updating the Panchayat Electoral Roll in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir for 2024 have been announced by the State Election Commission (SEC). The Commission's revision schedule states that the draft Panchayat Electoral Roll will be published beginning on January 15, 2024. Additionally, January 1st, 2024 has been retained as the qualifying date for those individuals who have reached the age of 18 and are now qualified to have their names registered in the Panchayat Electoral Roll of 2024. In a similar vein, claims and objections for additions, deletions, corrections, and transpositions must be submitted between January 15 and February 5, 2024. The Election Registration Officer (ERO) will handle claims and objections on February 16, 2024, and the final publishing of the Electoral Roll 2024 will take place on February 26. The schedule also states that special camps would be organised where polling booths are located. On January 27–28 and February 3–4, 2024, the Panchayat Election Booth Officials (PEBO), which are made up of Village Level Workers (VLWs), Multi Purpose Workers (MPWs), and Gramme Rozgar Sevak (GRS), will be on hand to assist voters with the necessary paperwork and the Panchayat Roll. DM Jammu seeks explanation from absentee staff of SDH Akhnoor

JAMMU: Today, district magistrate Sachin Kumar Vaishya surprised everyone by touring government buildings in all of the western district's tehsils and evaluating how well they run and provide public services. The DM went to Sub Division Hospital Akhnoor to inspect the infrastructure, medical amenities, and staff attendance. When he discovered certain employees were not on duty, he asked them why.
