Hoshiarpur, Jan 10: On Wednesday, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari dedicated and placed the cornerstones for 29 national highway projects in Punjab, totaling Rs 4,000 crore. The projects comprised the construction of three bridges on the Jalandhar-Makhu road, a four-lane portion of the Jalandhar-Kapurthala road, a six-lane flyover and a two-lane road over bridge in Ludhiana. Gadkari lay the groundwork for a number of projects, such as the four-laning of the Ferozepur bypass and the Hoshiarpur-Phagwara route. Speaking to an audience here, Gadkari stated that the administration, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party, is constructing motorways, including green motorways that are assisting in reducing travel times.Further, the minister for road transport and highways stated that, in order to improve connectivity between Punjab and Delhi, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana, five greenfield motorways and economic corridors are being constructed at a cost of Rs 1.20 lakh crore. In addition, he discussed the 670 km greenfield motorway project that will connect Delhi, Amritsar, and Katra. When it is finished, he stated, one may go from Delhi to Amritsar in four hours and from Delhi to Katra in six. SRINAGAR, Jan 10: Mussarat Islam, the managing director of Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), urged customers today to pay off any outstanding electricity bills. If they don't, KPDCL will be forced to accelerate its disconnection drives as required by Section 56 of the Electricity Act. He added that if smart metre customers do not pay their outstanding power bills, they will be automatically disconnected.The MD expressed grave concern about the high default rates in the residential, business, and industrial categories and said that the money collected from the settlement of outstanding bills will allow KPDCL to have sufficient resources available for the purchase of electricity, which is essential for ensuring a steady supply. The MD added that high default rates are negatively affecting the Corporation's financial stability since they will affect the flow of funds under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), which aims to modernise the LT Distribution Network in Kashmir Division.The MD further said that, in light of the imperative for realisation of arrears, KPDCL has issued instructions to all 19 Electric Divisions to further expedite the disconnection drives of defaulter consumers who are unwilling to pay their energy dues on time. Jammu, Jan 8: Over 2,000 birds perished in a fire that started at a poultry farm on the outskirts of Jammu city, according to officials on Monday. They said that the event happened on Sunday night on the farm owned by a man named Ranjeet Singh in the Doke Jagir area of Akhnoor tehsil here. The abrupt onset of the fire immediately spread throughout the entire poultry factory and eventually consumed the entire farm, according to the officials. They added that the fierce fire claimed the lives of almost 2,000 hens. They also stated that efforts are being made to determine the cause of the fire and evaluate the degree of the damage. NEW DELHI, Jan 8: The DGCA, the aviation authority, announced on Monday that the Boeing 737-8 Max planes' inspections had been satisfactorily completed. As a "abundant precautionary measure" in the aftermath of the Alaska Airlines disaster, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) ordered domestic airlines on Saturday to inspect the emergency exits of every Boeing 737-8 Max aircraft in their fleets right away. "Air India Express (4), Spicejet (8), and Akasa (20) have satisfactorily completed these checks on the operational fleet of Boeing B737-8 Max aircraft," the DGCA stated in a statement.It further stated that one B737-8200 aircraft with a mid-cabin door and a successfully completed operational check is part of Akasa Air's fleet. NEW DELHI, Jan 8: Due to weather-related conditions in the nation's capital, which saw a minimum temperature of 5.3 degrees Celsius on Monday—two degrees below the season's average—20 trains that were headed for Delhi were delayed. KATHUA: Magnum Stone Crusher and SK Stone Crusher were fined more than Rs 67 lakh for engaging in illicit mining in the Ujh River today. District Mineral Officer (DMO) Rajinder Singh levied the fine following the measuring of several pits surrounding stone crushers, wherein minor minerals were extracted and removed for further processing. The DMO reported that earlier on social media, a number of complaints and videos showing these stone crushers engaging in illicit excavation with the use of large JCB chainsaws appeared. A team of mineral guards was assigned by the DMO to gather information and proof after they took geotagged images and videos of every illicit mining location near the stone crushers.Following the computation of the penalty, the owners of stone crushers received notices requiring them to deposit the entire sum within seven days in addition to stern warnings to follow the regulations set forth by the Geology and Mining department. The DMO further disclosed that routine operations are carried out in the local Khads of Mager, Sahar, Ujh, Ravi, Tarnah, Bhini, and Mager Rivers, where stone crushers and mineral leases are located. He declared that unlawful mining would face severe consequences.
