JAMMU, Sept 26: Police today busted a gang allegedly involved in the theft of electric transformers, and arrested five persons, including a Rohingya refugee, in connection with a case registered at Police Station Janipur.
Officials said a case FIR number 161/2026 under section 303(2) of the BNS was registered on the complaint of one Vijay Sharma, AEE, Electric Sub-Division-II, JPDCL, Janipur, regarding theft of the distribution transformers.
They were identified as Mohammad Younas of Sandhori, Bajalta; Asghar Ali of Bajalta, Mohammad Yousaf of Bajalta, Zakir Hussain of Burma, presently residing at Bathindi; and Zakir Hussain of Sandhori, Bajalta.
Officials said on the disclosure of the arrested individuals, police recovered two stolen 250 KVA transformers from Ring Road, Kot Bhalwal.
Police have also seized two vehicles allegedly used in the thefts—a tipper (JK02CW-3254), used for transporting the transformers, and a Scorpio (JK02DC-7156), allegedly used for conducting recce and facilitating the thefts.
Officials said the gang would identify isolated transformers during the day and steal them during late-night hours using the tipper.
The copper and oil extracted from the transformers were allegedly disposed of in the scrap market, they said.
Officials added that further investigation in the case is underway to identify other associates and receivers of the stolen property.
