27-10-20205 : Team India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney after scans revealed internal bleeding resulting from a rib cage injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia on October 25.
According to sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the 30-year-old suffered the injury while attempting a running catch to dismiss Alex Carey. Iyer sprinted back from point and landed awkwardly on his left side after completing the catch, injuring his ribs upon impact with the ground.
Following the match, Iyer complained of severe pain and was taken for medical evaluation, where scans confirmed a laceration injury to the spleen.
In an official statement, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said:
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status.”
A BCCI official described the incident as a “freak injury,” adding that the medical team advised readmitting Iyer to the ICU as a precautionary measure due to internal bleeding.
“We are expecting him to be fine later this week,” the official said.
Iyer did not return to the field for the remainder of the innings. Despite his absence, India won the match by nine wickets, successfully chasing down 237 runs with Rohit Sharma (121)* and Virat Kohli (74)* leading the charge.
Iyer’s recent career has been plagued by fitness concerns. Earlier this year, he had informed the BCCI of his decision to take a break from red-ball cricket due to stiffness and back fatigue.
During the ongoing Australia tour, Iyer scored 11 and 68 in the Perth and Adelaide ODIs respectively.
