JAMMU: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), in collaboration with the Urban Forest Division, Jammu, on Sunday launched a mega plantation drive under the ‘Green Jammu, Clean Jammu’ initiative, planting more than 2,000 saplings along the Sunjwan–Chowadi Road.
The plantation drive was inaugurated by JMC Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) with the objective of improving air quality, enhancing urban biodiversity, and developing sustainable green spaces across the city.
As part of the initiative, a three-layer plantation was carried out on previously unpaved land alongside newly constructed footpaths, transforming the stretch into a green corridor aimed at improving the area’s ecological balance while creating an attractive public space for residents.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from people from all walks of life, including Mahant Shri Rameshwar Dass Ji of Shri Ram Mandir, members of the Chamber of Commerce, officials of the Jammu Municipal Corporation and the Urban Forest Division, senior citizens, local residents, volunteers, and Swachhata Champions. Participants also took a pledge to protect the environment and maintain cleanliness in the city.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Devansh Yadav announced that nearly 50,000 trees would be planted across Jammu during the current monsoon season. He urged citizens to actively participate in protecting and nurturing the newly planted saplings, stressing that public involvement is crucial to the success of the campaign.
The Commissioner said similar green corridors, walkways, and landscaped public spaces would be developed across Jammu to provide residents with cleaner, greener, and more pleasant spaces for walking and recreation. He also highlighted the tree adoption initiative, under which citizens can adopt saplings through QR codes and take responsibility for their care.
Dr. Yadav further informed that two to three mega plantation drives would be organized every week to achieve the target of planting more than 50,000 trees during the monsoon season.
Among those present were Joint Commissioner (Health & Sanitation) Abdul Sattar, Divisional Forest Officer (Jammu) Ashwani Sharma, Health Officer Dr. Shahid Hussain, Assistant Floriculture Officer Dr. Rabia Khan, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon Dr. Priyanka Malhotra, Executive Engineer Yasir Bashir Kitchloo, Mahant Shri Rameshwar Dass Ji, members of the Chamber of Commerce, senior citizens, local residents, volunteers, and officials of the Jammu Municipal Corporation and the Urban Forest Division.
