JAMMU: Northern Railway’s Jammu Division conducted a special ticket checking drive throughout May 2026 to curb ticketless and irregular travel and safeguard railway revenue, officials said.
During the month-long drive, ticket checking staff carried out intensive inspections at railway stations, on trains and across platforms to identify passengers travelling without valid tickets and those violating railway travel regulations.
According to data received up to May 31, 2026, a total of 12,693 cases were registered against passengers found travelling without tickets, without valid passes, on platforms without platform tickets and for other travel-related irregularities.
The enforcement drive resulted in the collection of ₹66,50,165 in revenue for the division through penalties imposed on offenders.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu Division, Uchit Singhal said ticketless travel not only causes financial losses to the Railways but also creates inconvenience for passengers travelling with valid tickets.
He said ticketless travel often leads to unauthorized occupation of seats, overcrowding and security-related concerns, adding that special checking squads are regularly deployed to address the issue.
Uchit Singhal emphasized that the objective of the drive is not merely to collect fines but also to create awareness among passengers regarding the importance of travelling with valid tickets.
He urged passengers to obtain valid tickets before commencing their journey through computerized reservation centres, the UTS App, the IRCTC website or railway booking counters. He also advised people visiting railway stations to receive or see off passengers to purchase platform tickets before entering station premises.
The official warned that passengers found travelling without tickets could face legal action along with penalties under Sections 137 and 138 of the Railways Act, 1989.
Northern Railway’s Jammu Division said similar drives will continue in the future to ensure transparency in railway operations, protect railway revenue and provide better facilities to honest passengers.
