SRINAGAR: The majority of the Kashmir Valley was still covered in dense fog on Friday, and three locations—including Ganderbal—recorded their coldest nights of the year as the region's nighttime low continued to drop. The Valley's temperature remained below freezing today, and the coldest night of the season—minus 6.7 degrees Celsius—was recorded in Ganderbal, Budgam, Central Kashmir, and Bandipora, North Kashmir. South Kashmir's Pahalgam recorded a low of -5.4 degrees Celsius. Qazigund in South Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius, while Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir, shivered at minus 3.3 degrees. A low of minus 2.5 degrees Celsius has been recorded at the well-known ski resort of Gulmarg. Kokernag recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.0 degrees Celsius. SDRF rescues man trapped in 35-foot-deep well in Baramulla

BARAMULLA: In Tangmarg village here, on Thursday, 45-year-old man who was stuck in a 35-foot-deep well was freed by State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) officials. The man was stuck in the well for more than nine hours, according to officials. "A rescue operation was carried out by the SDRF team to save a 45-year-old man who was trapped for 9 hours in a 35-foot-deep well in north Kashmir's Tangmarg village in Baramulla district," said officials from the SDRF. The SDRF team rescued seven labourers who were stranded in the flooded Ujh river in the Kathua district earlier in June of this year. According to an SDRF official, the labourers were left stranded in the Ujh River after hilly areas were flooded by intense rainfall. He continued, saying that the labourers got stuck after going fishing in the river and needed help from the locals to be rescued. 7 cattle charred to death in fire incident

UDHAMPUR, Dec 28: Today, a house in the Sarad area of Latti tehsil caught fire, killing seven cattle—four of which were buffaloes—charring them to death. According to reports, this evening the brothers Joginder Lal and Sudesh Kumar's Kucha house in Sarad village, close to Latti, unexpectedly caught fire. Since there was no Fire and Emergency Service station within 50 kilometres, the villagers attempted to put out the fire by using buckets and other pots to pour water on it, but they were unable to do so.The family's four buffaloes and three cows perished in the fire, and other household items suffered significant damage. After calling for a fire tender from Chenani, which took roughly two hours to arrive, seven cattle had already perished from burns, and the entire house, including the cattle shed, had sustained damage. Sarpanch Lati, Kasturi Lal Gupta, Sarpanch Sirah, and Bup Sarad are among the locals who have urged Lt Governor Manoj Sinha to approve the construction of a fire station at Latti, for which government land has been identified. They claimed that during the previous year, there were roughly 6-7 fire incidents in the area, resulting in lakhs of damage to property in the Latti/Dudu Sub Division. JAMMU: Three police officers from the 1999 batch, Nitish Kumar, Anand Jain, and Chayya Sharma, have been promoted to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. "In pursuance to the recommendations of the Screening Committee in its meeting held on 20.12.2023, Ms. Chhaya Sharma, IPS (AGMUT: 1999), Shri Anand Jain, IPS (AGMUT: 1999) and Shri Nitish Kumar, IPS (AGMUT: 1999), currently posted in the cadre, are hereby promoted to the ADGP Grade (LEVEL 15 in the Pay Matrix) w.e.f. 01.01.2024 or from the date of assumption of charge, whichever is later" , reads the order. Qatar Court Commutes Death Sentence To 8 Indian Nationals: MEA

New Delhi, Dec 28: The External Affairs Ministry announced on Wednesday that eight former Indian Navy personnel who were found guilty of espionage had their death sentences revoked by a Qatari court. The ministry released a statement saying, "We have noted the verdict of the Court of Appeal of Qatar in the Dahra Global case, in which the sentences have been reduced." The Court of First Instance in Qatar sentenced the eight ex-Indian Navy members to death in October after they were detained in connection with a suspected espionage case.August 2022 saw the arrest of the Indian nationals, who were all workers for Dahra Global, a company based in Doha. The authorities in Qatar withheld the charges against them from the public. Last month, India filed a motion with the Court of Appeal in Qatar to overturn the death penalty. The family members were present in the Court of Appeal today, along with our ambassador to Qatar and other officials. Since the start of the situation, we have supported them, and we will keep offering all possible legal and consular support. We'll keep bringing up the issue with the authorities in Qatar as well," the statement read.The ministry stated that it was in close communication with the legal team and the family members to determine the next course of action, while acknowledging that a comprehensive ruling was still pending. "It would not be appropriate to make any further comment at this juncture due to the confidential and sensitive nature of proceedings of this case," the MEA stated.
