POONCH: The mortal remains of Havildar Mohd Iqbal, an Assam Rifles soldier who lost his life while on duty in Nagaland, were brought to his native village of Kallar Mohra in Poonch district on Wednesday.
Army personnel paid floral tributes to the fallen soldier, honouring his courage, dedication and service to the nation. A large number of local residents, relatives and well-wishers gathered at his residence to pay their last respects and bid a final farewell.
Havildar Mohd Iqbal was serving in Nagaland when he made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. His mortal remains were received with full military honours before the last rites.
Meanwhile, Assam Rifles also paid tribute to Rifleman (GD) Govind Singh of 28 Assam Rifles during a wreath-laying ceremony organised at Radhanagar Battalion in Tripura to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his martyrdom.
Rifleman Govind Singh was martyred on July 10, 1996, during a counter-insurgency operation in the Mandrala area of Jammu and Kashmir. Acting on specific intelligence about the presence of militants, security forces launched a search operation. As the team approached the suspected militant hideout, it came under heavy fire. During the ensuing encounter, Govind Singh displayed exceptional courage and sustained fatal injuries while fighting the militants.
The wreath-laying ceremony was attended by the Subedar Major, Adjutant, Second-in-Command, Commandant and other personnel of the battalion. The gathering observed a two-minute silence in honour of the fallen soldier.
Assam Rifles said the ceremony reaffirmed the force’s commitment to remembering the sacrifices of its personnel and preserving the legacy of those who laid down their lives in service of the nation.
