Govt cracks down on illegal betting, bans 300 websites and apps

NEW DELHI: In a major crackdown on illegal online gambling, the Centre on Friday banned around 300 websites and mobile applications involved in betting and casino-style gaming activities.

The blocked platforms include online sports betting sites, casino apps offering games such as slots and roulette, live dealer platforms, and peer-to-peer betting exchanges. Authorities also targeted Satta/Matka networks and real-money gaming applications.

Officials said that a total of nearly 8,400 such platforms have been blocked so far, with around 4,900 taken down after the enactment of the Online Gaming Act.

Earlier this year, in January, the government had already blocked 242 illegal betting and gambling links as part of intensified enforcement measures.

The action follows the passage of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, which received assent from President Droupadi Murmu after being cleared by Parliament in August last year.

Officials said the crackdown reflects the government’s commitment to protecting users—especially youth—from the financial and social harm caused by illegal betting platforms. The legislation aims to regulate online gaming while curbing addiction, financial losses, and misleading promises of quick wealth.

The government noted that the issue has global recognition, with the World Health Organization classifying gaming disorder as a health condition in its International Classification of Diseases. It describes the disorder as a pattern of behaviour marked by impaired control over gaming, prioritisation of gaming over daily activities, and continuation despite negative consequences.

Authorities said the ongoing crackdown is part of broader efforts to ensure a safer digital ecosystem and promote responsible online engagement.
