NEW DELHI: On December 8, a case of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 was found in Kerala, according to official sources on Saturday. The 79-year-old woman’s sample had tested positive for influenza-like illness (ILI) on November 18, according to the report. She also reported that she had recovered from COVID-19 and was exhibiting mild symptoms of the illness. According to the sources, over 90% of COVID-19 cases in India right now are mild, and the patients are being isolated at home. A JN.1 sub-variant traveller from India was previously discovered in Singapore. The individual was a resident of the Tiruchirapalli district of Tamil Nadu and had arrived in Singapore on October 25. Following the strain’s discovery in them, there was no discernible rise in cases in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruchirapalli district or elsewhere. “The source stated that no additional cases of the JN.1 variant have been found in India.” The JN.1 sub-variant, which was initially discovered in Luxembourg and has since spread to multiple nations, is descended from the BA.2.86 Pirola variant. According to a source, it has a large number of distinct mutations, especially in the spike protein, which may help with immune evasion and enhanced infectivity.
