CHAMBA : Officials said on Tuesday that one additional body had been found in the wreckage, bringing the total number of fatalities in the Chamba landslide to five.
The body of 34-year-old Sohan Singh Rawat, a native of Kirgani village, was discovered as the fifth on Monday night, according to Tehri’s District Magistrate Mayur Dikshit.
On Monday, a large landslide near a parking lot in Chamba buried five people alive, including a woman and her infant who was four months old.
He claimed that search and rescue activities lasted for around 12 hours. Each of the deceased’s next of kin has received a financial assistance payment of Rs. 4 lakh, he said.
According to the authority, the Chamba-New Tehri highway is still blocked off because of the buildup of landslip material.
He stated that four families who lived in a vulnerable area close to the landslide’s location had been relocated to safe locations and that an order had been issued for a geological survey of Chamba.
