PM Narendra Modi taking everything personally”: Mallikarjun Kharge amid diplomatic row with Maldives

KARNATAKA: Within the context of a diplomatic spat with the Maldives over three deputy ministers' 'derogatory remarks' about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress claimed on Tuesday that the PM has been taking things 'personally' ever since he took office in 2014. In an interview with the media, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge promoted cordial ties with neighbours. "Since assuming office, Narendra Modi has been interpreting everything personally. On a global scale, we ought to maintain positive relations with our neighbours...We must act in accordance with the clock.We are powerless to alter our neighbours," Kharge remarked. After PM Modi visited the Lakshadweep Islands to boost tourism, three Maldivian deputy ministers made disparaging statements about him. This led to a diplomatic spat with the Maldives.All it took for PM Modi to promote travel to the Lakshadweep islands this past weekend was a string of postings on X. But it also sparked a social media feud between Indian users and politicians, government employees, and Maldivian politicians. Prominent Maldivian social media users, including politicians, quickly responded to PM Modi's message with disparaging remarks against Indians and the PM. The Maldivian Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Mariyam Shiuna, made a derogatory and sarcastic reference to Prime Minister Modi in a post that has since been removed. Nonetheless, the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) has vehemently denounced disparaging statements made by government representatives. Declaring India to be among the Maldives' closest allies and neighbours, MATI pointed out that throughout the island nation's history, India has always been the first to respond to major crises. "India is among our closest allies and neighbours. Throughout our history, India has consistently been the first to respond to crises, and we are incredibly appreciative of the close ties that the Indian government and people have maintained with us," a statement from MAITI read. It emphasised how India has "consistently and significantly contributed to the Maldives' tourism industry." After the borders were reopened, it was said that India had "greatly assisted" the Maldives' recovery efforts from the COVID-19 pandemic.As per MATI's news release, "Since then, India has continued to remain as one of the top markets for the Maldives." "It is our sincere wish that the close relationship between our two nations endures for generations to come and as such, we refrain from actions or speech that may have any negative impact on our good relationship," it continued. “Article 370 implemented out of fear…” Farooq Abdullah

JAMMU: Farooq Abdullah, the president of the National Conference, stated on Monday that the reason Article 370 was put into place was because of worries that Punjabis could move and settle in Jammu and Kashmir following division. We brought nothing but Article 370. Maharaja Hari Singh introduced and put into effect this in 1947. Speaking at a press conference in Jammu, he stated, "It was only out of fear that the people of Punjab would come here after partition and settle down and the poor people of our state would sell their land at lesser rates." Abdullah claimed that Article 370 was enacted by Maharaja Hari Singh in order to save the people of Jammu and Kashmir. "After the division, Maharaja Hari Singh enacted Article 370 to protect the impoverished residents of Jammu and Kashmir. He solely gave the jobs to J&K and Ladakh residents. He stated, "This was Article 370." The Union Government's decision to repeal Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted Jammu and Kashmir special status, was supported by the Supreme Court earlier in December 2023. On appeals contesting the government's attempt to repeal Article 370, a five-judge Constitution bench that included Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant rendered their decision. The Supreme Court declared that Article 370 was only a provision for the time being."The Maharaja's declaration declared that the Indian Constitution will take precedence. This results in the termination of the Instrument of Accession paragraph. The State was in a state of war, so Article 370 was a temporary solution. Article 370 is a provision that is temporary, as indicated by a literal reading as well," the Court stated. It said that no decision made by the Centre on behalf of a State could be challenged in court, as this would bring the State's administration to a complete halt. In August 2019, the federal government declared that Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370 would be revoked, dividing the area into two union territories. In its ruling, the Supreme Court mandated that Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections take place by September of the following year. According to Modi, the health of the impoverished is benefiting from the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra.The prime minister stated, "Who had thought that officials and politicians would come to the doorstep of the people in villages and every nook and cranny of the country?" noting that "Modi's vehicle of guarantee" is reaching every corner of the nation. "'Modi ki guarantee' is being discussed not only in the country but worldwide," he stated. Modi also spoke with recipients throughout the programme who applauded the government's measures.Since the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra's inception on November 15 of last year, Modi has met with its beneficiaries on a regular basis throughout the nation. By ensuring that the benefits of these programmes reach all targeted recipients in a timely way, the government hopes to achieve saturation of its flagship programmes through the nationwide Yatra.
