New Delhi, Jan 7: The health ministry announced on Sunday that there were 756 new instances of Covid in India, bringing the total number of active cases to 4,049. The ministry’s statistics, updated at 8 am, shows that five deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, two from Kerala, one from Maharashtra, and one from Jammu and Kashmir. Up until December 5, 2023, the number of daily cases had fallen to double digits; however, cases started to rise once more as a result of the appearance of a new variation and the cold weather. According to government sources, the number of instances reported on a single day after December 5 peaked on December 31, 2023, with 841 cases.In all, there are currently 92% of active cases that are being treated at home by specialists. According to the sources, “the currently available data suggests that the JN.1 variant is not causing an exponential rise in new cases nor a surge in hospitalisation and mortality.” There have been three waves of COVID-19 in India, with the Delta wave in April–June 2021 seeing the highest number of daily new cases and deaths. On May 7, 2021, the number of new cases and deaths was 4,14,188, the highest ever.Over 4.5 crore people have been afflicted and over 5.3 lakh have died since the pandemic started in early 2020. According to the ministry’s website, nearly 4.4 crore individuals have recovered from the illness, meaning that the country’s recovery rate is 98.81 percent. As per the ministry, the nation has been issued 220.67 crore doses of the Covid vaccination so far.
