Kashmir’s Upper Reaches Receive Season’s First Snowfall

SRINAGAR: The higher reaches of Kashmir, including Gulmarg, Gurez and other mountainous regions, experienced the season’s first snowfall this week, marking the early onset of winter in the Valley.

Fresh layers of snow blanketed several high-altitude areas such as Affarwat in Gulmarg, Sinthan Top in Anantnag, Zojila Pass, Gumri, Minimarg, and Razdan Top — the gateway to Gurez Valley in Bandipora district.

According to officials, light snowfall began early Monday morning at Razdan Top, leading to a dip in temperatures across the upper reaches. Despite the change in weather, vehicular movement on the Bandipora–Gurez road remained open.

The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain and snowfall in parts of Jammu and Kashmir from October 5 to 7 due to a fresh western disturbance. Light rainfall was also reported in Srinagar and its adjoining areas, while intermittent showers were recorded across several parts of North and South Kashmir.

The fresh spell of snow has brought cheer among locals and tourists, who view it as the first sign of the approaching winter. However, authorities have advised commuters and travelers to exercise caution, particularly in higher altitudes, as temperatures continue to drop and road surfaces turn slippery.
