Srinagar, Jul 11: National Conference (NC) on Friday offered tributes to party founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s wife, Akbar Jehan, on her 25th death anniversary.
The party leadership, including NC president Farooq Abdullah, paid floral tributes to Akbar Jehan at her mausoleum in the Hazratbal area of the city.
Several party leaders, functionaries, and workers had gathered at the mausoleum to pay tributes to Akbar Jehan.
The party leaders offered ‘fateha’ — special prayers for the departed soul — and hailed her contribution to J-K. She was a two-time MP.
She served as the MP from Srinagar from 1977-79, and from Anantnag from 1984-89. Jehan died on July 11, 2000, here at the age of 84.
She is the mother of former chief minister Farooq Abdullah and grandmother of the sitting Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah.
Her husband, Sheikh Abdullah, founded the NC and also served as prime minister of J-K from 1948-53, a post which was later rechristened as chief minister.
