US to return 297 illegally trafficked Indian antiquities following PM’s visit

SEP 22, 2024 : PM Modi on Sunday expressed deep appreciation for US President for ensuring the return of 297 invaluable antiquities to India. Modi is in the US for a three-day visit to “further strengthen India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.”On Saturday, he went to Wilmington, Delaware, the home of President Biden, to attend the Quad Leaders’ Summit. “Strengthening the fight against the illegal trafficking of cultural properties and fostering deeper cultural connections.” I am incredibly appreciative of President Biden and the US government for making sure that 297 priceless treasures were returned to India. @JoeBiden @POTUS,” Prime Minister Modi wrote on X. India and the US inked their first agreement in July to stop the illicit trade in cultural property and to bring antiques back to their original owners. “Preserving culture and legacy: returning antiquities.During PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the US, the US side helped 297 stolen or smuggled antiquities return,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote in post on X. “On the fringes of their bilateral meeting, PM and @POTUS @JoeBiden saw symbolic handing off of the artefacts. In an effort to stop the illicit trade in cultural property and the theft of antiques, India and the United States have inked the first-ever Cultural Property Agreement. On September 22, Modi will be in New York, attending an event for the Indian community on Long Island. The following day, he will speak at the UN General Assembly during the Summit of the Future.
