Srinagar, Aug 31: National Conference (NC) president Dr Farooq Abdullah Saturday congratulated banned Jama’at-e-Islami for fielding candidates in the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
“I congratulate Jama’at for stepping out and taking part in assembly elections. It is a good step,” Dr Farooq told reporters after paying obeisance at Kashmir’s revered saint’s shrine Sheikh Hamza Makhdoom Sahib (RA) in Srinagar. On being asked about PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti’s recent remarks in which she alleged NC for poll rigging and forcing Jama’at and other political parties to stay away from elections in 1987, Dr Farooq replied that she should focus on safeguarding the country rather than engaging in blame game.“May Allah keep her (Mehbooba) in good health. Nothing can be achieved by raising fingers, rather she should focus on safeguarding the country,” Dr Farooq said.
He said India is an abode of multiple religions and languages. “From Tamil Nadu to Kashmir, and this diversity must be protected,” he said.
He added that good relations between Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians are essential for the country. “If we keep this principle intact in Kashmir, it will enlighten the entire country,” he said.
