New Delhi, Aug 7: Days after the Supreme Court halted Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a defamation case, his membership in the Lok Sabha was reinstated on Monday.

The notification stated, “Subject to further judicial pronouncements, the disqualification of Shri Rahul Gandhi… in terms of the provisions of Article 102(1)(e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, has ceased to operate.Following his reinstatement, the Congress stated that it would like him to play a significant role in the discussion of the no-confidence resolution that is set to be discussed in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Gandhi was expelled from the Lok Sabha on March 24, with effect from March 23, after a Gujarat court found him guilty of defamation and gave him a two-year prison sentence.
A legislator is immediately disqualified for any sentence of more than two years.
Last Friday, the Supreme Court issued a stay of execution, clearing the door for the reinstatement of his Lok Sabha membership.
He is a member of the lower house for Wayanad.
