Violence erupts in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani after madrasa demolition; shoot-at-sight ordered

HALDWANI: curfew was implemented here on Thursday after the destruction of “illegally built” madrasa sparked rioting in the city’s Banbhoolpura neighbourhood, according to officials. After officials razed the madrasa that was constructed on government land, locals threw stones at police and set fire to cars, they claimed. As per SSP Prahlad Meena, the villagers were given prior notice before the destruction of the madrasa occurred. Meena reported that residents in the madrasa’s vicinity threw stones at journalists and police officers, injuring few of them. He said that the demonstrators also set cars on fire. The madrasa, according to the SSP, was situated on “illegally encroached government land”. He said that SDM Paritosh Verma, City Magistrate Richa Singh, and Municipal Commissioner Pankaj Upadhyay were there when the destruction was done.
