28-Jan : The famed hill resort of Ooty, located in the Nilgiris area of Tamil Nadu, continued to experience frost on Sunday despite seeing a minimum temperature drop to 1.3°C. On Sunday morning, the frost and sudden drop in temperature transformed the peaceful and picturesque hill station into a miniature version of Kashmir. However, the extreme cold caused people to huddle around bonfires in an attempt to stay warm, interrupting their daily lifestyles. Every year, frost occurs in the steep Nilgiri district from November to February. But this year, because to storms and rain, it began later in January. In Ooty City and its environs, including Kanthal, Pinker Post, and Thalai Kunta, icy plains were seen. The water droplets on the grass at Ooty and the neighbouring places appeared as frozen lumps because of the frost. Particularly in places like Pinkerpost, Thalikunda, Ooty Racecourse, and Kanthal, the crisp green grass appear to have a white carpet laid over it. There was as much as an inch of snow on parked cars. Many people are experiencing runny noses, coughs, and rash on their hands and feet as a result of the snowfall. The villagers in the upper regions of Tamil Nadu were thrown out of gear by the intense cold, which caused the people, who were not used to such low temperatures, to rush indoors for the warmth. The Nilgiris district’s vast grasslands resembled a wonderland, with new dew droplets—also referred to as white frost—covering the verdant grass. Several parts of the well-known hill station, including Ooty Nagar, Thalikunda, HPF, Kanthal, and Fingerpost, were covered with white frost. There was up to an inch of ice on parked cars, and locals complained that it was difficult to start their cars. Local MeT officials report that throughout the past few weeks, there has been a noticeable difference in day and nighttime temperatures, with the highest temperature consistently staying around 25 degrees Celsius.
