Srinagar, Nov 27 :According to authorities, seven students from an agricultural university were detained here on Monday under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for allegedly cheering the Indian cricket team’s defeat in the World Cup final and yelling offensive slogans. According to the officials, the youths who were arrested are enrolled in classes at the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST)–Kashmir. Following an investigation by police into a complaint from a non-local student, who claimed his collegemates had harassed him and yelled offensive remarks after India lost the cup and final match to Australia, the students were taken into custody.
According to the officials, the students have been charged under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and the UAPA. (Agencies)
