NEW DELHI, June 1 : On Thursday, SC refused to list for urgent hearing a plea challenging the notifications enabling exchange of Rs 2,000 denomination currency notes without any requisition slip and ID proof. Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and K V Vishwanathan’s vacation bench took note of Ashwini Updhyay’s requests for an urgent hearing but decided not to consider those requests over the summer break.
The bench stated, “We are not taking up these kinds of cases during the summer vacation,” adding that the appeal can be brought before a bench presided over by the Chief Justice of India. The attorney requested an urgent listing of the case and said that both thieves and terrorists exchange Rs 2000 bills without a receipt or other kind of identification, such as an Aadhaar card.
He asserted that returning banknotes with a value of Rs 2000 has resulted in the exchange of Rs 50,000 crore in banks in a short period of time, and that any delays in hearings will result in the exchange of all black money in banks.Updhyay has appealed the Delhi High Court’s order on May 29 to dismiss his PIL challenging the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) and State Bank of India’s (SBI) notifications permitting exchange of Rs 2,000 banknotes without having to provide any documentation.
The RBI said on May 19 that it would stop issuing Rs 2,000 currency notes, and that those now in use could either be deposited in bank accounts or exchanged by September 30.
However, the banknotes with a face value of Rs 2,000 will still be accepted as legal money, according to a statement from the RBI.The RBI announced that beginning on May 23, exchanges of Rs 2,000 notes into bank notes of other denominations can be done at any bank up to a ceiling of Rs 20,000 at a time in order to maintain operating convenience and avoid interfering with bank branches’ usual operations.
