New Delhi, Feb 11: On Sunday, President Droupadi Murmu was present for the ceremonial handover of command of the Army Guard Battalion based at Rashtrapati Bhavan. During the ceremony, the 1st Battalion of the 5th Gorkha Rifles assumed command from the 6th Battalion of the Sikh Regiment, which had served as the ceremonial Army Guard Battalion. At Rashtrapati Bhavan, the ceremonial Army Guard is rotated among several infantry battalions in the Army.Apart from providing ceremonial guard duties at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Army Guard Battalion also conducts ceremonial duties at several significant occasions, including the Guard of Honour to dignitaries, the Republic Day parade, the Independence Day parade, and the Beating the Retreat Ceremony. The president gave thanks to the officers and troops of the 6th Battalion of the Sikh Regiment for their adherence to the finest military traditions and their hard work in carrying out their duties at Rashtrapati Bhavan during the occasion.According to a release from Rashtrapati Bhavan, she greeted the 1st Battalion of the 5th Gorkha Rifles and expressed confidence that, during their tenure, they will set a new standard at the Rashtrapati Bhavan after their great 166-year history. On May 22, 1858, the 1st Battalion of the 5th Gorkha Rifles was created. The regiment saw action in both World Wars and was recognised for numerous bravery-related achievements.
