NEW DELHI: Leader of the House and Union Minister Piyush Goyal took a hard stance against Congress on Saturday, stating that the previous UPA government led by Congress would have given former Prime Minister Chaudhary Singh the Bharat Ratna if he had been a member of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty. Additionally, he declared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s announcement of Charan Singh’s Bharat Ratna is a “moment of pride”. In advance of the Lok Sabha elections, he was addressing during the final session of Parliament’s current budget session. Piyush Goyal stated in his address that the opposition leader has to apologise to the nation for “insulting” Chaudhary Charan Singh. “…LoP should apologise to the country for insulting Chaudhary Charan Singh,” Goyal stated. Praiseing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s choice to present Charan Singh with the Bharat Ratna, he declared, “It is a moment of pride that PM Modi gave respect to Chaudhary Charan Singh by awarding him the Bharat Ratna…” Piyush Goyal took aim at the Congress during his speech, stating, “It is a source of pride that Prime Minister Modi honoured Chaudhary Charan Singh with the Bharat Ratna…The Modi government’s awarding of their former prime minister should have been a cause for celebration for the Congress today. Regretfully, though, his last name was Nehru-Gandhi. It would have worked if he had been a member of the first family.”The opposition benches were also targeted by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, who said, “You have insulted Chaudhary Charan Singh’s legacy and you have virtually insulted him.” Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh was not on your schedule. By fostering such an atmosphere in the House over Chaudhary Charan Singh, you are harming every farmer in the nation. We ought to hang our heads in shame. “I won’t put up with any disrespect against Chaudhary Charan Singh. He is a symbol of unwavering integrity, a perfect public life, and dedication to farming.The Vice President continued, “I have personally witnessed commotion, chaos, condemnation, yelling, and sloganeering.” The nation’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, will be given to MS Swaminathan, popularly regarded as the father of the green revolution, along with previous prime ministers Chaudhary Charan Singh and PV Narasimha Rao, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday. The current Lok Sabha’s term is coming to an end before this year’s general elections, which are probably going to take place in April or May.
