Mehar Tunnel Excavation Along Jammu-Srinagar Highway Suspended After Bulges Appear On Sidewalls

RAMBAN/JAMMU, Dec 18:  The 270-kilometer Jammu-Srinagar national highway has "pressure and bulges" developing on its sidewalls, which has forced the suspension of excavation work for the Mehar tunnel, officials announced on Monday. Over a year and a half ago, work on the 780-meter C-type tunnel began in order to avoid the Mehar-Cafeteria section of Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district, which is prone to slides. After a significant landslip damaged the tunnel's mouth in June of this year, excavation on the Cafeteria Morh side of the tunnel was put on hold. Thus far, excavation work has covered almost 400 metres.An official from DMR Construction, the company doing the construction, stated that after "pressure and bulges" were found on the side walls, the excavation work was halted for the safety of the workers. On December 12, all equipment and labour were removed from the tunnel project. A senior DMR Construction official, Vinay Kumar, stated that the company has notified the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and that joint teams of experts and designers are expected to visit the tunnel for a comprehensive investigation. Due to the slow progress of the four-lane expansion of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, multiple deadlines have already been missed since the project began in 2011. NEW DELHI, Dec 18: After two bills to provide women's reservation in the legislative assemblies of Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir were approved by voice vote in the House amid a furore from the opposition over the security breach in Parliament, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned until 4 pm on Monday. The Lok Sabha last week passed two bills: the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Second Amendment) Bill. The opposition parties, who have been demanding that Union Home Minister Amit Shah give a statement regarding the December 13 security breach in the House, have been continuously chanting slogans as the Upper House passed the Bills.Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar stated that there is "collective concern" regarding the security breach following the Bills' passage. Such incidents have also happened in the past. Speaker Lok Sabha has already constituted a high-level inquiry committee for an in-depth investigation of the incident and the formulation of a concrete action plan to ensure that such incidents do not occur. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that this august institution operates in the safest and most conducive atmosphere. The House will eventually be informed of its findings, the chairman stated.As the commotion persisted, Dhankhar declared that he was in a "helpless situation" and hoped that Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition, would see him in his chamber. The House was then adjourned until 4 pm by the chairman. The Rajya Sabha met again at 2 pm after two adjournments in the morning session when opposition parties led by the Congress brought up the issue of a security breach in Parliament. Nityanand Rai, the Minister of State for Home Affairs, introduced the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Second Amendment) Bill, both of which were passed in less than twenty minutes.Rai urged every member to vote "in favour of women's rights" by supporting the bills. Members expressed their support for the proposed laws during their brief remarks on the Bills. A few participants urged the federal government to schedule elections in Jammu and Kashmir as soon as possible. Some suspended LS MPs protest with placards on steps of Parliament

NEW DELHI: On Monday, a few of the 13 suspended Lok Sabha members demonstrated in front of Parliament, holding placards and calling for Home Minister Amit Shah to issue a statement regarding the incident involving the security breach. With placards in hand, Congress MPs Mohammed Jawaid, Hibi Eden, Benny Behanan, Dean Kuriakose, and S Venkatesan of the CPI(M) protested against the government while seated on the steps of Makar Dwar of Parliament. According to Jawaid, the purpose of the protest is to convey the message that the events of December 13 were a major security breach, and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ought to have addressed the House about it and explained to the citizens of the nation why it occurred."You (BJP leaders) praised the new Parliament building, claimed that it was fully secure, it has not even been four months and during a debate intruders came in the Lok Sabha chamber, what can be a bigger breach...so either the PM or the Home Minister (Amit Shah) should make a statement in the House," the congressman from Kishenganj said. On the suspension of the lawmakers, Jawaid stated, "We have seen in the four-and-a-half years, whenever someone has asked for answers from the prime minister, the home minister, Adani, suspension is a small thing, membership is being terminated, as we saw in Rahul Gandhi's case." As they entered and left the Parliament building, a number of opposition MPs stood in solidarity with the legislators who had been suspended and took pictures with them. On December 13, two protesters with opposition parties leaped from the visitors' gallery into the Lok Sabha chamber, demanding a statement from Shah. Shah's resignation has also been requested by some members. The government has maintained that the Lok Sabha secretariat is in charge of maintaining security in the Parliament complex and that it has been doing so in accordance with the Speaker's orders. It has also previously pointed out a great deal of these infractions, charging the opposition with politicising the matter.Due to their disruptive behaviour, thirteen opposition MPs—nine from the Congress and Kanimozhi of the DMK—were barred from the Lok Sabha for the balance of the session, which ends on December 22. The suspension has been met with criticism from opposition parties, who point out that their members have been suspended for bringing up the matter, while BJP MP Prathap Simha, who helped two accused carry smoke canisters on their way, has escaped punishment. People Say Kashmir Is Mini-Switzerland, I Say Switzerland Is Mini-Kashmir: Bhagyashree

SRINAGAR, Dec 18:  Actor Bhagyashree says that Kashmir is peaceful and stunning, and he questions why people travel abroad when India has so much natural beauty. The 54-year-old, who gained notoriety in 1989 with her feature debut "Maine Pyar Kiya," claimed that many travellers are eager to see the Valley but are afraid. "This place always brings to mind the couplet by Amir Khusro, 'If there is Paradise on Earth, it is here, it is here, it is here.'" During your lifetime, make sure to visit Kashmir. I don't know why people travel to Europe or Switzerland because this place is so serene and lovely. Why travel abroad when there is so much beauty in our own nation? At an Anantnag tourist resort, Bhagyashree said Kashmir is compared to Switzerland by some here, but I argue that Switzerland is more like Switzerland. Here, you experience inner serenity. You will never run into trouble because people are so wonderful, she continued. The actor also lauded the hospitality and food of Kashmir. She went on, "The people are as sweet as jaggery and the food is very tasty." Most recently, Bhagyashree appeared in the viral video "Sajni Shinde Ka," which also starred Nimrat Kaur and Radhika Madan.
