IMD warns of heavy rain, snowfall in J&K, Ladakh, Himachal over next 2 -3 days

NEW DELHI: A severe western disturbance is expected to cause heavy rain and snowfall in some areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh during the next two to three days, according to a "orange" notice from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday. According to the IMD, this is the first severe western disturbance of the season and will have an impact on northwest and central India through October 17. Weather phenomena known as Western disturbances, which have their origins in the Mediterranean, bring unusually heavy rainfall to northwest India. Under the influence of the western disturbance, Punjab may expect heavy rain on Monday.During this time, regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, west Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan are expected to see thunderstorms and lightning. Under the influence of the western disturbance, a cyclonic circulation has formed over central Pakistan and the surrounding areas. Temperatures in the area are therefore expected to drop by 2 to 4 degrees starting on October 17. JAMMU: Ghulam Nabi Azad, the leader of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party, claimed on Saturday that the eviction campaign to reclaim government property was "illegal" and promised to reinstate the Roshni Scheme if his party wins the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections. The J&K State Land (Vesting of Ownership to the residents) Act, 2001, commonly known as the Roshni Act, which was to transfer 2.5 lakh acres of land to current residents, was revoked on November 1, 2020, by the administration of the Union Territory.After the Revenue department instructed all deputy commissioners to guarantee the complete removal of encroachments from state land, including the area meant for grazing that was brought under the Roshni Act on 7 January of this year, the government was able to recover more than 10 lakh kanals of land. Only 15.85% of this land had its ownership rights approved for transfer. On November 28, 2018, the plan was officially revoked by the governor at the time, Satya Pal Malik. "Since the eviction drive was illegal, we organised over 85 protests throughout the UT."Azad informed a group of Gujjars who had joined his party in this location, "When the protests had no effect, I met with the Lt Governor and the Home Minister and raised the issue forcefully." Community members from the Gujjars met Azad at his home and told him that they were being harassed by government authorities who kept claiming that they were living on forest land and that their homes and businesses would be destroyed. ''After 1947, people occupied land in the plains for their resettlement,'' according to Azad, and everyone in Jammu & Kashmir is dealing with this issue. The forest land statute was automatically extended to J&K when Article 370 was repealed in August 2019, but instead of putting it into practise, the administration launched an illegal eviction drive',' Azad claimed. He defended the Roshni programme by saying it was created to help the landless, underprivileged people in the villages as well as legalise the land in the cities to produce income. The J&K cabinet, which is led by me, and the assembly approved the plan. Maharaja (Hari Singh, the final Dogra king), Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah (the NC founder), and afterwards my government all gave land to the landless, he claimed. SRINAGAR, Oct 14: On Saturday, two people were murdered when the truck they were riding in plunged into a narrow valley on Kashmir's Zojila Pass in the Ganderbal district. According to an official, a truck travelling from Kargil to Sonamarg lost control and plunged into a deep gorge close to Mandir Mode on Zojila. Punjab Police busts LeT terror module with arrest of 2 J&K residents

CHANDIGARH: On Saturday, the Punjab Police announced that it has deactivated a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror cell after detaining two Jammu and Kashmir citizens. They were taken into custody, according to the police, along with two IEDs, two hand grenades, a revolver, two magazines, 24 cartridges, a timer switch, eight detonators, and four batteries. Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav stated that the State Special Operation Cell-Amritsar Police carried out the operation alongside a central organisation. "In a major breakthrough, State Special Operation Cell -Amritsar in a joint operation with a central agency busted a LeT module and arrested two persons who are residents of Jammu and Kashmir," the Punjab Police chief wrote on X. Yadav claimed the arrests were a "major blow to terror module attempting to disturb peace in Punjab" and claimed the terror module was run by one Firdaus Ahmed Bhat, a current Lashkar-e-Toiba member. IT dept recovers over Rs 42 cr cash during raids on Karnataka contractors

BENGALURU: As part of its tax evasion investigations against some Karnataka-based contractors and others connected to them, the Income Tax Department on Friday discovered more than Rs 42 crore in cash hidden in a residential building here, according to official sources. Prior to assembly elections in five states, the searches set off a political brawl between the BJP and the Congress, which are currently in power in Karnataka. According to official sources, the department has sent out cash counting devices and more personnel to determine the total quantity of cash recovered. The searches are currently in progress. Security forces find 3 cylinder IED planted near Handwara

SRINAGAR : An important IED attack on the Srinagar-Kupwara Highway near Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir was stopped by security troops on Friday. "A high-powered IED connected with three 10-kilogram LPG Cylinders was spotted by an alert Road Opening Party near Langait," said the Indian Army. The IED was allegedly planted on the National Highway that connects Kupwara and Srinagar, according to the officials. "Nearly 1000 civilian vehicles and 200 military vehicles passed by the location of the IED. The IED was discovered by the column of an air defence unit stationed nearby, according to the Indian Army. According to a press release, security personnel earlier that day blew up three suspicious gas cylinders they had discovered in the village of Ganapora in the Kupwara area of north Kashmir.The Army's road opening party (ROP), in coordination with the 30 Rashtriya Rifles (30RR) and Handwara Police, controlled the explosion of the suspicious cylinders. According to an official press release, "In a swift response to a potential security threat, the ROP of 25 ADP in collaboration with the 30 Rashtriya Rifles (30RR) and Handwara Police, successfully detonated three suspicious small petrol cylinders found along the roadside in Ganapora, area of Kralgund Handwara in Kupwara district."
