SAMBA: In a tragic car accident at Nanke Chak last night, two young people perished, including a bridegroom who was scheduled to attend his marriage reception here. A Breeza car with registration number JK21-G 1311, reportedly carrying the groom and his friend, was en route from Lengath village to Samba. It was struck by a swift caravan with registration number PB04N 9375 that was travelling from Punjab to Jammu after it arrived at Nanke Chak. Two young people were killed on the spot, including the unfortunate bridegroom who was scheduled to attend his marriage reception ceremony at Samba on Sunday night, when the caravan pulled the car behind it for a short distance before turning into a turtle and crushing the car beneath it.The bridegroom, Sushil Kumar, son of Mansukh Dayal of Langath near Nanke Chak, Samba, and his friend, Romi, son of Ashok Kumar of Nanke Chak, were identified as the deceased. The bridegroom planned to take his wife, who had gone to the Beauty Parlour at Samba for makeup, to her wedding. But as soon as word got out about the bridegroom's and his friend's deaths, all the celebration and merriment quickly gave way to grief. Family members, friends, and other relatives of the deceased were shocked by the pall of gloom that had descended upon the marriage reception party. According to reports, the dead bodies were trapped inside the car when it turned turtle and was crushed by a trailer.After frantic efforts by police and Traffic Police officers, who used cutters to cut the car in order to extract the bodies, they were removed from it. The police brought the deceased bodies to Samba Hospital for a postmortem and other official procedures. The police have started a manhunt to search the trailer's driver, who is also at large. The collision caused a massive traffic jam on the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway, trapping cars for up to five kilometres. To clear the congestion and resume traffic on the highway, police and traffic police had to work together for hours. People from the surrounding areas flocked to the scene in a state of panic shortly after the accident. The bodies were trapped in the caravan, which had crushed the car beyond recognition, so they also called the police to remove the dead bodies. Two days prior, Sushil's marriage ceremony was held, and on Sunday, the family hosted a reception for the marriage at a Samba marriage hall. NEW DELHI: On Monday, the Supreme Court is expected to rule on a number of petitions that contest the repeal of Article 370. A five-judge Constitution bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will determine the constitutionality of the Center's August 5, 2019, decision to repeal Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted the former state of Jammu and Kashmir special status. The Supreme Court began its 16-day, all-day hearings in August, and on September 5 it reserved its decision.The verdict was expected to be delivered by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud's five-judge Constitution bench, per the cause list posted on the Supreme Court's website for Monday, December 11. Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, and Surya Kant make up the remaining members of the bench. Following a 16-day hearing, the supreme court had reserved its decision in the case until September 5. Attorney General R Venkataramani, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, senior advocates Harish Salve, Rakesh Dwivedi, V Giri, and others representing the Centre, as well as the intervenors defending the repeal of Article 370's provisions, were heard by the top court during the proceedings. Prominent legal experts, such as Dushyant Dave, Gopal Subramanium, Rajeev Dhavan, Zaffar Shah, and Kapil Sibal, had presented arguments in support of the petitioners. The lawyers had discussed a number of topics, such as the constitutionality of the Center's decision to repeal Article 370, the legality of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, which divided the former State into two Union Territories, and objections to the June 20, 2018, imposition of Governor's rule in Jammu and Kashmir and the December 19, 2018, and July 3, 2019, extension of President's rule. In 2019, the Constitution bench was tasked with considering petitions contesting the repeal of Article 370 and the legality of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which created the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh out of the former State. On August 2, the arguments in the case had started. The top court had questioned during the hearing who could suggest that Article 370 be revoked in Jammu and Kashmir when there isn't a constituent assembly there, whose approval is needed before such a move can be taken. The highest court had further inquired as to how Article 370, which the Constitution expressly stated was temporary, could become permanent following the dissolution of the Jammu and Kashmir Constituent Assembly in 1957. Some of the petitioners who opposed the repeal of Article 370 had contended that the provision could not have been revoked because the Jammu and Kashmir Constituent Assembly had drafted the State's Constitution during its term, which ended in 1957. They had claimed that since the Constituent Assembly was no longer in existence, Article 370 became permanently applicable. The Centre had maintained that there was no "constitutional fraud" involved in the removal of the clause giving the former State of Jammu and Kashmir its special status. NEW DELHI: According to official sources on Sunday, the cash seizure in the income-tax department's searches against an Odisha-based distillery company has surpassed Rs 300 crore and is now the "highest-ever" such haul in a single action carried out by any probe agency in the nation. Sunday marked the start of the fifth day of the extensive raids against Boudh Distillery Private Limited, its promoters, and others. The taxman began the raids on December 6 in response to allegations of "off-the-book" transactions and tax evasion. According to the sources, cash worth over Rs 300 crore has been counted thus far, and the process is still ongoing. The department thinks that the whole money cache is "unaccounted" revenue that the business group, distributors, and others made from the cash sales of country spirits. According to the sources, this is the largest cash seizure that a government agency has ever carried out in the nation as part of a campaign against a single group and organisations connected to it. A few of the high-value seizures from the past include one in 2019 when the GST Intelligence raided a businessman in Kanpur and seized cash worth Rs 257 crore, and another in July 2018 when the I-T department discovered cash worth Rs 163 crore while conducting searches against a road construction company in Tamil Nadu. The department is also recording the remarks made by executives and other employees who were at the searched locations, and it will shortly send out summonses to the company's principal backers to record their statements as well. UDHAMPUR: Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo visited several prestigious project sites in the twin districts of Ramban and Udhampur today in addition to conducting an on-the-spot assessment of the state of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The Chief Secretary evaluated the District's critical infrastructure implementation, including National Highway-44, at Ramban. Senior officers from various sectors, including key project directors, Baseer-Ul-Haq Chaudhary, SSP Traffic, Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, DIG, DKR Range, Dr. Sunil Gupta, Deputy Commissioner, Ramban, Mohita Sharma, SSP Traffic, and Rohit Baskotra, attended an important meeting held by Dulloo in Chandrkote.Following the meeting, the Chief Secretary conducted a physical inspection of dangerous locations along the National Highway, including Dalwas and other areas in the Ramban region.
