Vinesh Phogat leaves her Khel Ratna and Arjuna Awards at Kartavya Path

NEW DELHI: Pro wrestler Vinesh Phogat gave back her Arjuna Award and Khel Ratna on Saturday, leaving them at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, as she was stopped by the police from going to the Prime Minister's office. The gold medallist from the Asian Games had declared earlier in the week that she was returning her medals, claiming that they were no longer meaningful in light of the current struggles wrestlers are facing for justice. This decision was communicated by Phogat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a letter. She left the awards at Kartavya Path, where Delhi Police later collected them, after the police prevented her from delivering the awards in person to the Prime Minister's office on Saturday.She was protesting the current situation in the wrestling community with this act. While she won the Arjuna Award in 2016, Vinesh was awarded the Khel Ratna, India's highest sports honour, in 2020. In opposition to the election of Sanjay Singh, a close associate of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh who had been accused of sexual harassment by well-known grapplers, Phogat, along with fellow Olympic medallists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, had voiced their concerns. Early this year, the grapplers staged a protracted protest at Jantar Mantar. A Delhi court is handling the case. Sakshi Malik had even declared her retirement from the world of professional wrestling shortly after Sanjay Singh became the WFI Chief. Later, the newly-elected panel was suspended by the Sports Ministry for making decisions that did not follow the guidelines set forth in its own constitution. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was then directed to establish an ad hoc committee to manage the wrestling organization's operations. In her letter, Phogat highlighted the differences between their actual lives and the glitzy depictions in "fancy government advertisements" that talk about women's empowerment on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).In response to a directive from the Sports Ministry, the IOA on Wednesday formed an ad hoc committee consisting of three members to oversee the daily functions of the Wrestling Federation of India. The two-time World Championship medallist Phogat emphasised in her letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that she no longer felt any connection to the Khel Ratna and Arjuna awards. POONCH: Due to security concerns, Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), was stopped by the police on DKG road in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir. She was travelling to meet the relatives of those killed close to the site of an anti-terrorist operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district. As Mehbooba Mufti and her supporters attempted to move forward, they were observed fighting with multiple police officers. Mehbooba and her supporters protested the situation after it happened to show their displeasure. Mufti questioned the limitations placed upon her, pointing out that other political party leaders had been permitted to visit the region. She cast doubt on the perceived threat and proposed that an attempt to withhold information could be the true problem. "Leaders of the National Conference are welcome to attend, but BJP President Ravinder Raina is not allowed to do so because of a possible threat. These people pose the greatest threat here, in my opinion. They desire that we not get to know those families. Then, they're attempting to conceal something," Mufti remarked. The Indian Army announced that it is looking into the deaths of three civilians in the Poonch-Rajouri area, where on December 21 militants attacked army personnel, leaving four soldiers dead. The Indian Army intends to increase the number of troops stationed in the Poonch-Rajouri sector in order to curb the activities of Pakistani terrorists there, given the recent increase in attacks on its troops. The families of three civilians slain in the Poonch sector were also met by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh earlier. Noor Mohammad, the victim's brother, claimed that Rajnath Singh had promised them justice after they had a meeting with the minister of defence. "When we informed him about the incident, he promised that justice would be served. He promised that justice would be served, even though whatever had happened to us was terrible. JAMMU:Ramesh Kumar, Divisional Commissioner for Jammu, examined today's plans for the UT-level Republic Day Celebration at MA Stadium. In addition to senior officers of the Police, Army, CRPF, BSF, SSB, Air Force, Jal Shakti, JPDCL, PWD, JMC, Health Services, Information, Education, Cultural Academy, Youth Services and Sports, Hospitality and Protocol, and other concerned departments, there were also Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Sachin Kumar Vaishya, SSP Jammu, SSP Security Jammu, and SSP Traffic.The Division Committee assessed the plans that each department needed to complete. JAMMU: Using video conferencing, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha engaged with the public at the Civil Secretariat's "LG's Mulaqaat" Live Public Grievance Hearing programme. After evaluating the complaints filed on JKIGRAMS, the Lieutenant Governor instructed the officials to respond to citizen complaints and concerns in a timely, effective, and efficient manner. 55 Foreign Terrorists Among 76 Neutralised In J&K In 2023: DGP

Jammu, Dec 30: Director General of Police R R Swain said on Saturday that 76 terrorists, including 55 foreigners, were neutralised in Jammu and Kashmir this year under the Public Safety Act. According to Swain, 201 overground employees were booked and 291 more terrorist associates were taken into custody. According to Swain, there are currently only 31 local terrorists in the Union Territory, which is a record low. According to him, there were 14 civilian deaths at the hands of terrorists in 2023; incidents linked to terror decreased by 63% from the previous year; there was also a decrease in terrorist recruitment, with fewer calls for strikes and acts of stone-throwing.According to Swain, four police officers—including a DSP and an inspector—have died in terror attacks. In Jammu and Kashmir, according to the police chief, 89 terrorist modules were dismantled, 18 terrorist hideouts were discovered, 99 properties valued at over Rs 170 crore—including buildings, land, orchards, and commercial establishments—were attached, and 68 bank accounts were frozen. He went on to say that more than 8,000 phoney social media profiles endorsing terrorism and separatism had been found and shut down. Drugs Worth Crores Seized In Baramulla Destroyed

SRINAGAR, Dec 30: On Saturday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police demolished a significant amount of illicit material valued at crores of rupees that had been found in the Baramulla district of North Kashmir. Under the direction of Senior Superintendent of Police Baramulla Amod Nagpure, the District Level Drug Disposal Committee Baramulla carried out the exercise. According to a police spokesman, the illegal substances that were taken from 27 cases at Police Station Uri, Boniyar, Pattan, Kreeri, Kunzer, and Tangmarg in the Baramulla district were destroyed at Pulwama.He stated that the items found in the confiscation weighed crores and included 6.303 kg of heroin, 63.413 kg of poppy straw, 207 kg of ganja, 652 kg of cannabis, 600 kg of cannabis powder, 3.950 kg of bang bosa, 953 kg of charas, 1.120 kg of charas powder, and 127 kg of fukki. In the presence of a committee that was appointed and led by the Deputy SP DAR Baramulla, the DySP ANTF Kashmir, the DySP CID CI Pulwama, the Executive Magistrate Kunzer, the Reader to the SSP Baramulla, the Field Inspector of the Pollution Control Board, and other district police officers, the seized drugs were destroyed at the Kashmir Health Care System, Lassipora Pulwama.It is important to note that Baramulla Police destroyed 32 cases of illegal substances that were seized from various police stations in the district in July 2023. Worth crores, the destroyed illicit materials included 6.376 grammes of charas, 32.900 kilogrammes of poppy straw, 14.289 kilogrammes of heroin, and 18 grammes of brown dugar.
