SRINAGAR: Despite two Western Disturbances (WDs) scheduled for next week, weather experts on Sunday ruled out any significant weather activity in Jammu and Kashmir till January 24. An official from the meteorological service stated here that “dry weather is likely to continue till January 24 with feeble WDs approaching on the 16th and 20th evening.” He stated that, as a result of these WDs, “isolated middle & higher reaches is expected during January 16th & 20th night.” Generally cloudy conditions with light rain and snow are anticipated. Overall, he stated, no noteworthy weather action is anticipated until January 24. Simultaneously, the official stated that there could be light rain and snow in “scattered” locations from 25–27 based on the predictions of various models.“Will update in coming days more clearly,” he stated. According to him, there will probably be thick fog and chilly weather over the Jammu region’s plains through January 16. In the meantime, freezing weather has returned, with a low of – 4.2°C recorded in Srinagar the night before compared to 0.2°C the night before. The MeT official added that the temperature was 2.1°C below usual for the summer capital of J&K for this time of the year. According to him, Qazigund recorded a minimum temperature of minus 3.0°C as opposed to minus 2.0°C the night before. According to the MeT official, the minimum temperature was 1.0°C lower than usual for Kashmir’s gateway town. In contrast to the previous night’s low of minus 0.6°C, Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 5.5°C, which was 1.6°C above average for the well-known south Kashmir resort. According to the official, Kokernag, located in south Kashmir, saw a minimum temperature of minus 2.2°C, compared to minus 1.2°C the night before. The temperature was also 1.4°C higher than usual for the area. According to the official, Kupwara town in north Kashmir saw a low of minus 4.0°C, which was 1.1°C above normal and down from minus 0.3°C the night before. According to the official, Gulmarg saw a low of minus 1.2°C, down from minus 1.0°C the night before, and the temperature was 6.7°C higher than usual for the well-known skiing resort in north Kashmir.He claimed that Jammu recorded a minimum temperature of 2.5°C, down from 4.0°C the night before. It was the coldest night of the season and 4.5°C below average for the winter capital of J&K. He claimed that the lows in Banihal (minus 0.8°C), Batote (3.9°C), and Bhaderwah (1.1°C) were recorded. The Kashmir valley is experiencing “Chillai-Kalan,” a severe 40-day winter season that ends on January 29. It does not, however, signal the end of winter. The next two periods are called “Chillai-Khurd,” which lasts for 20 days from January 30 to February 19, and “Chillai-Bachha,” or “baby cold,” which lasts for 10 days from February 20 to March 1.
