Srinagar, Oct 7: Due to the rapidly moving Western Disturbance, the weather office in Srinagar has forecast rain and snow for the highlands of Kashmir starting on Monday. The weather is anticipated to clear up starting on Wednesday, and this disturbance will last just briefly. From Monday, the meteorological agency (MeT) anticipates precipitation over higher levels. The MeT reported on Saturday that “rain/snowfall over higher reaches likely at various locations in Jammu and Kashmir during October 9 evening/night with main activity on October 10(70-80% chance)”.Snowfall is anticipated in certain higher elevations, including Zojila, Mughal Road, Sinthan Top, various other areas of the Pir Panjal Range, and the higher elevations of Gurez, Baramulla, Anantnag, and Kupwara districts, according to an independent weather forecaster. In the plains, snowfall is not anticipated, he said. After two days of rain, the MeT predicted mostly dry weather from October 14–20.MeT stated that while the odds are slimmer, “a brief spell of rain/snowfall over higher reaches cannot be ruled out.” This year, Kashmir experienced extended periods of dry weather and above-average temperatures, which caused the Jhelum and other water bodies’ levels to plummet. On September 25, rain finally arrived in Kashmir while the upper regions, including the ski resort of Gulmarg, saw their first snowfall of the year.
