BARAMULLA: A man impersonating as a CBI officer was arrested in Baramulla and household items and fake identity cards were recovered from his possession, Police said Sunday. A Police spokesman said that Police Station Kunzer received a written complaint from Farooq Ahmad Wani of WassunBangil that highlighted a sequence of events involving a group of individuals – Javed Ahmad Rather, AnjumanAfreen, Aaqib Ahmad Wani, and Rafeeq Ahmad Wani. The spokesman quoted the complainant as saying that Javed Ahmad Rather presented himself as a CBI officer to the complainant, brandishing a falsified CBI identification card and assured the complainant of securing a placement for their child at the National Defence Academy (NDA). He said that as the situation unfolded, the accused individuals resorted to burglary, absconding with various household items including a geyser, a bedsheet, an inverter, a CCTV camera, an LCD, and other valuables from the complainant’s residence. The spokesman said that the complainant was defrauded of a substantial sum amounting to Rs 40 lakh. Accordingly, a case under relevant sections of the law has been registered at Police Station Kunzer and an investigation was started. Prompt action by a Police team of Police Station Kunzer led to the arrest of the accused posing as a CBI officer with recovery of falsified documents including the purported CBI card and some stolen house items from the house of the accused. The Police spokesman said that the community members have been requested not to fall prey to such fraudulent people and share such information with the Police. “Our consistent action against anti-social elements would assure the community members that the Police has resolved to act tough against such inimical elements,” he said.
