JAMMU: A major portion of a protection wall along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) collapsed at Dalwas in Ramban district on Thursday evening, forcing closure of one tube of the four-lane highway and disrupting vehicular movement.

According to officials, nearly 40 meters of the wall, along with a section of the Sawni panchayat link road, eroded around 5 p.m., prompting authorities to divert traffic through a single open tube, leading to slow movement in the area.

Project Director, NHAI, Shubham Yadav said that the back wall collapse had damaged a 40-meter stretch. “One tube has been closed since Thursday evening. The cause of the erosion is yet to be ascertained. Restoration work is underway to make the affected tube trafficable at the earliest,” he said.

The collapse also damaged a portion of the local Sawni road, cutting off access for nearby residents. Teams from NHAI, traffic police, and the district administration are monitoring the situation to prevent further damage and ensure smooth movement on the strategic highway.
