KISHTWAR: The Geographical Indications Registry has awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) designation to saffron cultivated in the Kishtwar region of Jammu and Kashmir. Using a photo of the certificate, Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav announced the news on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). “Kishtwar Saffron receives its first GI tag… Tagged alongside Kashmiri Saffron, several FPO brands are now on the horizon! The post says, “Icing on the cake certified as grade 1.” The spice is grown in some areas of Kashmir and the Kishtwar region of Jammu. In Jammu’s remote mountainous district of Kishtwar, saffron, also known as Kumkum, is a major cash crop and the source of legends about the most expensive harvest.A cultural legacy associated with purity and freshness is saffron farming. Locally, the saffron-producing region of Kishtwar is referred to as Mandal.
