SRINAGAR, Feb 8: According to data from the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, January was the warmest in 43 years in a number of areas of Jammu and Kashmir, including Srinagar city. With just 3.0 mm of precipitation in January this year, Srinagar city saw the second driest January in the previous 40 years, according to reports. In January 2018, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir experienced the least amount of precipitation, with only 1.2 mm of snowfall. The maximum temperature (TMT) for January was 11.9 degrees Celsius over the Srinagar station, whereas it was 5.7 degrees Celsius in Gulmarg, north Kashmir, and 16.9 degrees Celsius in Banihal, Ramban district.According to the report, Jammu city saw its lowest mean maximum temperature for the first month of the year in more than 40 years. According to a post on X by the MeT centre, this is the highest mean maximum temperature for the month of January for these stations in the previous 43 years. With the exception of the stations in the Jammu plains (Jammu, Samba, and Kathua), most J-K stations saw one of the driest and warmest Januarys in the previous 43 years in 2024. On the other hand, it stated that the Jammu station recorded the lowest mean maximum temperature since 1983 in January, at 13.4 degrees Celsius.Over Srinagar, Jammu, Gulmarg, and Banihal, the mean minimum temperature for January was recorded as minus 3.2 degrees Celsius, 5.5 degrees Celsius, minus 3.9 degrees Celsius, and 0.1 degrees Celsius, respectively. According to the MET centre, “the 2024 mean Tmin is one of the highest for Gulmarg in the last 43 years.”
