SIRMAUR (H.P.): A school principal in Himachal Pradesh found himself in an embarrassing situation after a cheque he issued for Rs 7,616 was rejected by the bank due to glaring spelling errors in the written amount.

The cheque, signed on 25 September by Alter Singh, principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Ronhat, correctly displayed the numerical amount. However, the written amount read: “Saven Thursday six Harendra sixty rupees” instead of “Seven thousand six hundred sixteen rupees”.

Despite bearing the school stamp and principal’s signature, the cheque was bounced by the bank, and an image of it quickly went viral on social media.

The incident sparked widespread online ridicule, with users questioning the quality of education in state-run schools. Many pointed out that confusing “Thursday” for “Thousand” and “Harendra” for “Hundred” raised concerns about the lessons being imparted to students.

Following the backlash, the school had to issue a corrected cheque. But the viral image had already turned a routine payment into a nationwide grammar lesson, drawing laughter and criticism alike.
