SRINAGAR: Due to their absence from the wedding last week, the groom and his father were detained by police on Tuesday in the Awantipora neighbourhood in south Kashmir. The reception was set to take place on September 16 in Kandizal village, which is 2 km from Awantipora town, according to the bride’s family. The bride’s family, on the other hand, filed a police station complaint against the groom and his family after they decided not to attend. In response to the complaint, police detained the groom and his father on Tuesday.“Residents of Kandizal Awantipora stated that their wedding reception was scheduled on September 16, 2023, with Fayaz Ahmad Dar, after performing the Nikah earlier,” a police spokesperson said in a statement. “Police Station Awantipora received a written complaint from one Shazia Akhter against Fayaz Ahmad Dar and his father Mohammad Shahban Dar son of Gh. Qadir Dar.” According to the statement, the groom’s family cancelled the celebration at the last minute under the pretence that he had fled and would not attend by disputing the Nikah that had been performed previously. “Upon receiving this information, Police took cognizance of the situation and filed FIR No. 182/2023 against the groom and his father in Police Station Awantipora in accordance with the applicable legal provisions. Both have since been placed under arrest. The police statement stated that additional investigation into the situation was ongoing.
