FIR filed after banner put up for name change at Akhnoor School

AKHNOOR, Apr 19: Police in Akhnoor have registered a case against unidentified persons after a banner was placed on the main gate of the Government Model Higher Secondary School Akhnoor, allegedly in an attempt to change the school’s name.
As per sources, the incident took place on April 14, when a group of people gathered outside the school, protesting the renaming of the historic institution to Government Model Higher Secondary School (Boys) Akhnoor from Maharaja Hari Singh Higher Secondary School.
They raised slogans and put up a banner that read “Maharaja Hari Singh Higher Secondary School” on the school gate.
On Saturday, school authorities filed a formal complaint regarding the banner.
Following this, the Police took cognizance of the matter and registered a case.
Several local organisations had earlier approached the Education Department and school administration to express their displeasure over renaming the school after Maharaja Hari Singh.
SHO Akhnoor, Sanjeev Chib, confirmed that a case has been registered and investigations are underway.
Police also reviewing the CCTV footage and questioning people to identify those involved in placing the banner, he said.
