Extended holidays not a solution to heat woes: Alok Kumar

SRINAGAR: Principal Secretary School Education Department Alok Kumar on Saturday said that the extended holidays are not a solution to heat woes.

Speaking to reporters, Kumar said that high temperatures have posed a challenges but maintaining school system is also necessary at the same time.

“We are all enduring the heat, but there is a system in which we have extended the holidays,” Kumar stated, highlighting the impracticality of keeping schools closed until temperatures subside completely.

He said that similar measures are not taken during colder months, indicating a need for consistency in educational operations.

“How many days will we keep the schools closed?” Kumar questioned, underscoring the need for schools to function uninterrupted.

He said that demands to close schools due to heat cannot always be accommodated, despite acknowledging flexibility for students facing health issues exacerbated by extreme weather.

Kumar said that school facilities include drinking water and shaded areas, acknowledging the absence of air conditioning but indicating future plans for installation as resources permit.

He concluded by affirming the department’s commitment to gradually improving infrastructure to mitigate heat-related challenges.
