New Delhi, Aug 22 : To promote increased voter involvement in the political process, the Election Commission (EC) will recognise cricketing hero Sachin Tendulkar as a “national icon” on Wednesday.
Tendulkar and the election commission will sign a memorandum of understanding here on Wednesday. Tendulkar’s three-year contract includes him promoting voter awareness.
The EC stated in a statement that “this collaboration would mark a significant step towards leveraging Tendulkar’s unparalleled impact with the youth for increasing voters’ participation in the upcoming elections, especially in the general elections (to Lok Sabha), 2024.”Through the partnership, the EC hopes to address the problems of urban and youth voter indifference.
To encourage people to participate in the electoral process, the EC has been aligning itself with well-known Indians from a variety of areas by referring to them as its “national icons.”
Actor Pankaj Tripathi was designated as a national icon by the commission last year. In the past, the EC’s national icons during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections had included veterans like MS Dhoni, Aamir Khan, and Mary Kom.
