Dengue cases rise in Kathua, Udhampur even as Jammu records overall decline

JAMMU, Oct 9: Even as Jammu district has witnessed a sharp decline in dengue infections this year, Kathua and Udhampur districts have reported a worrying rise in cases, according to the latest data issued by the Directorate of Health Services, Jammu.
As of October 8, 2025, Kathua has recorded 452 cases and Udhampur 168 cases, showing a marked increase compared to the same period last year.
Across the Jammu division, the total number of dengue cases has reached 1,573 this year, significantly lower than the 2,608 cases recorded during the corresponding period in 2024. However, the surge in Kathua and Udhampur has drawn attention to the uneven spread of infections across districts.
While certain districts reported spikes, Jammu district continues to dominate the overall tally but with a substantial 60% fall in dengue cases this year. Up to October 8, 2025, Jammu recorded 674 cases, down from 1,689 cases during the same period in 2024.
Within Jammu, municipal areas accounted for 498 cases, while non-municipal areas reported 176. The corresponding figures last year stood at 1,484 and 205 respectively, suggesting a sharp drop in urban dengue transmission.
According to the official figures, the cumulative dengue cases reported up to October 8, 2025, are as follows: Jammu (674), Kathua (452), Udhampur (168), Samba (112), Reasi (47), Rajouri (47), Poonch (15), Doda (19), Ramban (15), Kishtwar (3), Kashmir (17), and Other States/UT (21).
A comparison with last year’s data reveals that Kathua’s cases have nearly doubled from 231 in 2024 to 437 in 2025, while Udhampur’s count rose from 95 to 161 by October 7 – indicating that these two districts have become new dengue hotspots in the region.
On October 8 alone, 91 new dengue cases were detected from 310 tests conducted, with 59 males and 32 females testing positive. Overall, 17,141 dengue tests have been conducted this year, nearly matching last year’s 17,238 tests.
The cumulative data also shows that 34 patients have been admitted since January, of whom 27 have been discharged. One dengue-related death has been reported this year, referred from Jammu to DMC Ludhiana.
The first week of October 2025 witnessed 377 fresh cases across the Jammu region, with daily counts ranging from 10 to 89. Health authorities said continuous monitoring and vector-control measures are being implemented to curb the spread, particularly in Kathua and Udhampur where fresh infections are being reported steadily.
Officials from the Directorate of Health Services have urged the public to stay alert, eliminate stagnant water sources, and adopt preventive practices such as using mosquito repellents and nets.
