New Delhi, Feb 16: Ajay Maken, general secretary of Congress, claimed that the Income Tax department had frozen the party’s accounts, referring to it as a “freeze of democracy.” At the AICC headquarters in Delhi, Maken gave a press conference and said, “I have very disturbing news to share with all of you.” Both the Youth Congress and the Congress party’s accounts have been suspended. “We learned yesterday that the checks we are writing are not being honoured by the banks. We discovered after conducting additional research that the Youth Congress bank accounts have been frozen. Additionally, the Congress party’s accounts have been taken. Income tax requested a recovery of Rs 210 crore from the Congress party and the Youth Congress. Our accounts’ crowdfunding funds are no longer accessible. “When the opposition’s accounts are frozen just two weeks before elections, it’s like freezing democracy,” he continued. Ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections, the Congress leader questioned the purpose of the purported party account freeze. “When, barely two weeks before the national election declaration, the accounts of the main opposition party are frozen. Do you believe that democracy still exists in our nation? Maden said. “We lack the funds to cover the salaries, which will have an influence on all political operations, not just Nyay Yatra. The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal heard our case the day before yesterday, and the hearing is still in progress. We respect the legal system,” he continued. In the meantime, Bihar welcomed the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, led by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, on Friday. The Yatra is expected to visit Uttar Pradesh later today after reaching its conclusion in Bihar. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the general secretary of the Congress, will accompany Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra as it enters Uttar Pradesh on Friday night. Once the yatra crosses across from Bihar into Uttar Pradesh, she will meet up with her brother in Chandauli. The 6,700-kilometer East-West Manipur-Mumbai Yatra passes through 15 states with the goal of promoting the idea of “nyay” (justice) while encountering common people along the route.
