Gill dethrones Pakistan’s Babar Azam to claim top spot in ICC ODI Rankings

NOV 08, 2023 : Babar Azam was the top-ranked ODI batter in the world until Shubman Gill of India's blistering run in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. On Wednesday, the Men in Blue opener overtook the skipper of Pakistan in the ICC Men's ODI Batting Rankings. After an explosive start to India's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup campaign, Gill ascended to the top to dethrone Babar. He is now just the fourth player from his nation to hold the No. 1 ODI batter position, following in the footsteps of Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, and MS Dhoni.The right-hander has amassed 219 runs from six innings at the event thus far in the ongoing campaign, scoring 92 against Sri Lanka and 23 against South Africa. With eight knocks in the World Cup, the captain of Pakistan has accumulated 282 runs, ending his more than two-year reign as the world's best ODI batter. However, he is now six rating points behind Gill in second place. Virat Kohli, the previous captain, took fourth place in the rankings in the meantime. For the first time in his short but brilliant career, Gill is ranked #1, and Kohli's 543 World Cup runs propel him up three spots to fourth, one rating point ahead of South Africa's opener Quinton de Kock, who is ranked third. Among the ODI batsmen, it is noteworthy that India's Shreyas Iyer jumps from 17 to 18 overall, while Pakistan's opener Fakhar Zaman moves up three spaces to 11th and his Afghan counterpart Ibrahim Zadran moves up six spots to 12th. CWC 2023: ‘Miyan Magic’ combined with Shami’s lethal spell powers India to semi-final after 302 run victory against SL

MUMBAI: Mohammed Shami took the lead to lead India to the World Cup semi-finals following a commanding 302 run victory at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, mirroring the thrilling display of Mohammed Siraj in the Asia Cup final. The pace trio has been unbeatable since Shami entered the Indian playing XI, and the batsmen once again gave way to their skill. With the opening delivery, Bumrah sent Pathum Nissanka back for a golden duck, swerving sharply, finding an edge along the way, and hitting the pads just in front of the stumps. Nissanka attempted to use a review to reverse the outcome, but the umpires' call in favour of Bumrah ended Nissanka's night.'Miyaan Magic' enthralled the entire Sri Lankan team in the subsequent over. He sent Dimuth Karunaratne for a golden duck at his first ball in the evening. Karunaratne attempted to flick the ball, but failed miserably, and became trapped in front of the stumps. The next player to fall in the same over was Sadeera Samarawickrama. He attempted to punch the ball in an attempt to release some pressure, but instead he found a thick outside edge that went straight to Shreyas Iyer. On the opening delivery of his second over, he struck again, sending captain Kusal Mendis back for a score of 1(10), rattling his stumps.The umpire hit the famous "Siu" celebration of Cristiano Ronaldo as soon as his finger touched the air. In the flash of an eye, a few overs were over as Charith Asalanka and Angelo Mathew got to work on the repairs. But the middle order fell apart as Shami entered the attack. He removed two wickets in a row in his opening over of the evening, forcing Dushan Hemantha and Charith Asalanka to return to the dugout on opposite balls. With the goal of taking more wickets and ensuring that the Men in Blue won quickly, Shami continued to be an attacking player. KK India moved one step closer to the semi-final position thanks to Rahul's superb decision behind the stumps. It appeared as though Chameera had missed the shot when he attempted to flick the ball. Rahul was the only one to seek for a review after finishing the catch. The ball passed the gloves and the DRS displayed a spike because Rohit chose to believe Rahul's gut feeling. Umpire Chris Brown was even confused by the DRS outcome. By getting beyond Mathews' protection and cutting the stump bails, Shami grabbed his fourth victim of the evening and finished with a score of 12. With the manner that Shami was bowling, another wicket was probably not far off. After four overs, Kasun Rajitha fell for 14(17), ending Shami's chase for a wicket and earning him his second five-for of the 2017 World Cup.With a stunning 302 run victory at the end of the game, Ravindra Jadeja got the last wicket. Earlier in the innings, India amassed a score of 357/8 because to action-packed efforts from Virat Kohli (88), Shreyas Iyer (82) and Shubman Gill (92). Even though Dilshan Madhushanka took five wickets, the Indian squad was still able to score a huge amount of runs. Brief Score: Sri Lanka 55 (Kasun Rajitha 14; Mohammed Shami 5-18, Mohammed Siraj 3-16) against. India 357/8 (Shubman Gill 92, Virat Kohli 88, Dilshan Madushanka 5-80). New Delhi, Oct 31: Virat Kohli, an Indian batsman who is about to tie Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49 hundreds in one-day international cricket, has said that he never imagined amassing so many hundreds in just the past 12 years.During the current ODI World Cup, Kohli has been outstanding, amassing 354 runs in six games, including a century (his 48th) against Bangladesh in Pune. In an exclusive interview with Star Sports, Kohli shared his thoughts on the trajectory of his career."When it comes to cricket, I never imagined reaching my current level of success and realising how fortunate I am to have had such a long career and record of accomplishments," added Kohli. "Nobody can plan these things, the way your journey is going, or the way things unfold in front of you. I had always dreamed I'd do this, but I never thought things would pan out this way exactly." In these twelve years, I never would have imagined that I would score so many hundreds and runs," he remarked.In addition, Kohli set a record for the fastest hitter to reach 26,000 runs in a cricket career. In a press release released on Saturday, the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) said that Bishnah, Jammu resident and cricketer Vanshaj Sharma has been banned by the BCCI for submitting several birth certificates with different dates of birth. According to a release from Brig Anil Gupta Member Administration JKCA, "For this act, he has been banned from participating in all BCCI tournaments for a period of two years from October 27." Brig Gupta announced that the player would not be permitted to play in any age group BCCI competitions after serving a two-year ban and would only be eligible to compete in the Senior Men's Tournament run by the BCCl.The JKCA official went on to say that Vanshaj Sharma moved to another state in this particular circumstance and applied there to join the Bihar U-23 Men's squad.
