Vinesh Phogat leaves her Khel Ratna and Arjuna Awards at Kartavya Path

NEW DELHI: Pro wrestler Vinesh Phogat gave back her Arjuna Award and Khel Ratna on Saturday, leaving them at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, as she was stopped by the police from going to the Prime Minister's office. The gold medallist from the Asian Games had declared earlier in the week that she was returning her medals, claiming that they were no longer meaningful in light of the current struggles wrestlers are facing for justice. This decision was communicated by Phogat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a letter. She left the awards at Kartavya Path, where Delhi Police later collected them, after the police prevented her from delivering the awards in person to the Prime Minister's office on Saturday.She was protesting the current situation in the wrestling community with this act. While she won the Arjuna Award in 2016, Vinesh was awarded the Khel Ratna, India's highest sports honour, in 2020. In opposition to the election of Sanjay Singh, a close associate of former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh who had been accused of sexual harassment by well-known grapplers, Phogat, along with fellow Olympic medallists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, had voiced their concerns. Early this year, the grapplers staged a protracted protest at Jantar Mantar. A Delhi court is handling the case. Sakshi Malik had even declared her retirement from the world of professional wrestling shortly after Sanjay Singh became the WFI Chief. Later, the newly-elected panel was suspended by the Sports Ministry for making decisions that did not follow the guidelines set forth in its own constitution. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was then directed to establish an ad hoc committee to manage the wrestling organization's operations. In her letter, Phogat highlighted the differences between their actual lives and the glitzy depictions in "fancy government advertisements" that talk about women's empowerment on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).In response to a directive from the Sports Ministry, the IOA on Wednesday formed an ad hoc committee consisting of three members to oversee the daily functions of the Wrestling Federation of India. The two-time World Championship medallist Phogat emphasised in her letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that she no longer felt any connection to the Khel Ratna and Arjuna awards.   [caption id="attachment_8057" align="alignnone" width="300"] Vinesh Phogat leaves her Khel Ratna and Arjuna Awards at Kartavya Path[/caption]

Bajrang Punia To Return Padma Shri In Protest Over WFI Chief Election

NEW DELHI, Dec 22: Olympic wrestler Bajrang Punia made the decision on Friday to return the Padma Shri award in protest of Sanjay Singh's (a supporter of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh) election to the presidency of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). "I'm giving the Prime Minister my Padmashree back. This letter is all I have to say. This is my statement," the bronze-winning wrestler from the Tokyo Olympics wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter. On Thursday, Sanjay was chosen as the WFI president, with the panel headed by Brij Bhushan's close aide taking 13 of the 15 positions.Following Sanjay's election, Sakshi Malik, Bajrang, and Vinesh Phogat spoke at a press conference where Sakshi—who won a bronze medal in Rio in 2016—announced her decision to resign from the sport in protest. "Dear PM Ji, hope your health is well," Bajrang wrote in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I know you have a lot on your plate, but I wanted to take a moment to write to you about the wrestlers in our nation.You must be aware that the nation's female wrestlers began a protest against Brij Bhushan Singh in January of this year, claiming that he had harassed them sexually. I joined them in protest as well. After the government promised tough action, the protest ended.The well-known wrestler continued, "But even after three months, there was no FIR against Brij Bhushan," expressing his disappointment. In April, we protested on the streets once more to force the police to at least register a formal complaint against him.By April, there were only 7 complainants remaining from the 19 in January. Therefore, it can be said that Brij Bhushan influenced twelve female wrestlers. When Bajrang attempted to travel to the Parliament to meet with PM Modi and deliver his letter of protest against Sanjay Singh's election, he was stopped by Delhi Police officials at the Kartavya Path."No, I don't have authorization. I am unable to enter, so if you could please forward this letter to the PMs. When Delhi Police officers stopped Bajrang, he said, "I'm not being aggressive or protesting. Still on recovery, will need a few months to be 100% fit: Rishabh Pant

Dec-19 : The incredibly talented Rishabh Pant aspires to be fully match-fit in the coming months and maintain his schedule for the eagerly awaited return to competitive cricket in the Indian Premier League the following year. Pant, who narrowly avoided death in a terrifying vehicle accident last year, missed all of 2023 due to surgery. He is overwhelmed by the support and love from his fans, which enabled him to heal more quickly than anyone had anticipated. "I believe that my current state of well-being surpasses that of a few months ago. In other words, I'm still working my way back to 100% fitness. However, I think I'll be able to do it in a few months," Pant said with optimism in a video that the Delhi Capitals uploaded to their Instagram page.The captain of the Delhi Capitals, who will be in attendance at this mini auction along with Team Director Sourav Ganguly and head coach Ricky Ponting, came dangerously close to death in December of last year when his car crashed into a divider on the National Highway heading towards Rourkee and caught fire. The 26-year-old is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru after suffering several injuries. He is anticipated to return to action, though, when the Indian Premier League begins on March 22. Pant felt that he was realising for the first time how much the fans' love and concern touched him. "I think it's been really amazing because we always feel like nobody loves us because there is pressure on so many fronts when we play cricket. Well, it is a difficult time. But at least now I know that people adore us. They respect us, and from what I've observed over time as a result of my injury, people have shown appreciation and concern," Pant remarked. "I think it was heartfelt, like crazy for me because it means a lot as an individual." Pant claimed that people's love and support had contributed to his incredible recovery. When you are going through a difficult period or something similar occurs to you.It affects the mind as well as the body, so having loved ones and supporters means a lot and is extremely helpful in the healing process." Last season, David Warner, the opener for Australia, led DC in lieu of Pant and the team finished second from last. "I appreciate your unwavering support at all times. Yes, I am aware that as fans we have occasionally treated you poorly."However, as you can see, we always strive to give it our all. Hopefully, in the future, we will be able to return the favour and continue to support you in the same manner that you have shown us over time.
